Jason Vargas mowed down the slumping Tigers in Wednesday's 2-1 win in Seattle, allowing just one run on five hits in eight innings of work.
Vargas struck out six and walked none in moving to 4-2 on the season. Now the owner of a 2.79 ERA and 0.97 WHIP, Vargas remains a completely different pitcher at home than he is on the road, but making at least half his starts in Safeco Field, he should have what it takes to remain mixed-league valuable. You may want to keep him benched on Tuesday, however, where he'll take on the Red Sox in Boston.

Jason Vargas wasn't at his best against the Tigers on Tuesday but did enough to earn his third victory, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings.
Vargas struck out four and walked just one in the game. He surrendered a pair of towering home runs to Alex Avila and Miguel Cabrera, but limited the damage otherwise. He'll look to pick up his fourth win of the season when he takes on the Blue Jays in Toronto on Sunday.

Jason Vargas limited the Indians to one run on four hits and three walks in seven innings of Wednesday's 4-1 victory.
Vargas struck out seven in his best start of the young season. Now the owner of a 2.84 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 19/7 K/BB ratio through his first 25 1/3 innings, Vargas' numbers are particularly encouraging since three of his four outings have come away from Safeco Field. That being said, he's still best utilized as a spot starter outside of AL-only leagues. He'll get the Tigers in Detroit next week.

Jason Vargas pitched five innings of two-run ball in a 7-3 victory over the A's on Friday night.
Both runs came on a Yoenis Cespedes homer in the fourth. Vargas got the run support today he failed to receive in his outing in Japan. Of course, that's likely to be an issue for him all season long.

Jason Vargas was handed a no-decision after allowing one run over 6 1/3 innings in his season debut Thursday against the Athletics.
Vargas was very solid, giving up just two hits while walking a pair and striking out three. He was pulled in the seventh inning after walking Coco Crisp and getting Jonny Gomes to fly out, but Shawn Kelley gave up a two-run blast to Yoenis Cespedes to put the Athletics ahead. Vargas wouldn't really be worthy of fantasy attention if he pitched with many other teams around the majors, but he'll continue to have some value as a spot-starter thanks to Safeco Field.

Jason Vargas got pummeled by the Cubs in Monday's loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk in just 2/3 of an inning.
Vargas was as bad as you can be one outing after allowing five runs in four innings, serving up three doubles while requiring 36 pitches to record his two outs. Slated to face the A's in Japan next week, Vargas has posted a 12.46 ERA and 6/2 K/BB ratio through 8 2/3 spring innings.

Jason Vargas got roughed up by the Diamondbacks in his second spring start Friday, allowing five runs on six hits, two of which were home runs, across four innings.
He served up a solo homer to Aaron Hill in the first inning before Ryan Roberts tagged him for a three-run bomb in the fourth. The rough day comes after Vargas held the Padres hitless in four innings of work last Sunday. Penciled in as the Mariners' No. 2 starter, Vargas turned in a 5.42 ERA after the All-Star break last season after bringing a 3.49 mark into the Midsummer Classic. Despite making half of his starts at Safeco Field, he allowed 22 home runs in 201 innings of work in 2011.

Jason Vargas was perfect for four innings Sunday in the Mariners' 5-4 victory over the Padres.
Vargas wasn't backed by anything close to the Mariners' usual defense today, nor did he have Safeco helping him along. Still, he worked his magic, retiring 12 straight to start the game. He'll be the Mariners' No. 2 starter this season.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge is "leaning heavily" towards starting Jason Vargas in the second game of the season in Japan against the A's.
We already had a decent idea that Vargas would get the ball in that spot, because Hisashi Iwakuma told the media a few weeks ago that Wedge told him he wouldn't be starting in Japan. Vargas finished last season with a 4.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 131/59 K/BB ratio over a career-high 201 innings. The southpaw is only a spot-starter in mixed leagues when he has a decent matchup in Safeco Field.

Jason Vargas scattered five hits and one run across eight innings on Monday, improving to 10-13 in Seattle's 4-2 win over the A's.
Vargas struck out a season-high 10 while issuing zero free passes for just the fourth time in 32 starts. He'll finish 2011 with a 4.25 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 131/59 K/BB ratio compiled over 201 innings. As long as he re-signs with the Mariners this offseason, Vargas will remain a viable fantasy option in 2012.
