Jason Vargas got roughed up by the Diamondbacks in his second spring start Friday, allowing five runs on six hits, two of which were home runs, across four innings. He served up a solo homer to Aaron Hill in the first inning before Ryan Roberts tagged him for a three-run bomb in the fourth. The rough day comes after Vargas held the Padres hitless in four innings of work last Sunday. Penciled in as the Mariners' No. 2 starter, Vargas turned in a 5.42 ERA after the All-Star break last season after bringing a 3.49 mark into the Midsummer Classic. Despite making half of his starts at Safeco Field, he allowed 22 home runs in 201 innings of work in 2011.
