Jason Vargas (arm) felt "really good" in a 50-pitch simulated game on Saturday, according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia. Vargas hasn't pitched since mid-June but may be nearing a return. The Angels will wait a few days before deciding when Vargas will throw another bullpen session, but if that goes well the next step could be a rehab assignment. The left-hander was 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA before the injury.

Jason Vargas (arm) will throw a three-inning simulated game on Saturday. Vargas, who has been sidelined since mid-June when he underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his left armpit, could be sent out on a rehab assignment immediately afterwards if all goes well. He tossed a successful simulated game on Thursday. "The sim game will give us a better indication," skipper Mike Scioscia said. "He's going to need at least those two. We'll see where he is after that."

Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com hears that Jason Vargas "remains a possibility" for the Orioles. Kubatko says Vargas is one of the Orioles' two main targets right now. The left-hander remains on the disabled list while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot from his left armpit, so it's possible he could be a post-deadline option. Vargas is making $8.5 million this season before hitting free agency over the winter.

Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that the Orioles have been asking around about starting pitchers and names the Angels' Jason Vargas as "one interesting possibility." The Orioles have also been mentioned a possible landing spot for Bud Norris, though Knobler hears that they haven't made the Astros an offer. Vargas comes with some risk, as he is currently working his way back from surgery last month to remove a blood clot from his left armpit. He's a fly ball pitcher anyway, so he would probably be a poor fit for Camden Yards and the other hitter-friendly ballparks in the AL East.

Vargas has been sidelined since mid-June when he underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his left armpit. He will likely need one or two starts in the minors before rejoining the Angels' rotation in August.
