Jason Vargas tossed three scoreless innings during Thursday's 6-6 tie with the White Sox. Vargas has looked sharp to start the Cactus League with his new team. He has limited value in mixed leagues since he is average in so many ways, but he should be solid enough for the Royals in the middle of the rotation.

Jason Vargas threw two scoreless innings against the Padres in his spring debut Saturday. The Royals' $32 million man didn't disappoint in his first showing, allowing just one hit while striking out one. The southpaw had a 4.02 ERA in 150 innings with the Angels last season and should be solid if unspectacular again this year.

The Angels hope to retain free agent starter Jason Vargas, but they won't him a three-year contract. They also won't exceed an average annual value of $10 million for the 30-year-old left-hander, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. "We obviously have interest in having Jason back," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "This is the process and it's playing itself out, and we'll honor that. Obviously Jason earned the right to see what was out there in free agency. We'll maintain a rhetoric with him and do have interest in him returning. I think it's a mutual interest." The Angels declined to tender Vargas a qualifying offer out of fear that he'd accept the one-year, $14.1 million pact. The southpaw posted a 4.02 ERA and 1.39 WHIP this season.

Jason Vargas did not receive a qualifying offer. The southpaw posted a 4.02 ERA and 1.39 WHIP this past season while missing nearly two months of action due to surgery to remove a blood clot in his left armpit. Los Angeles is still interested in working out a multi-year deal with the impending free agent, so Vargas might return anyway. Vargas has also expressed interest in returning to the pitching-needy Angels.

Jason Vargas turned in a quality start in Sunday's loss to the Rangers, surrendering three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Vargas walked two and struck out four on the afternoon. He was able to limit any big innings, letting the Rangers strike for single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The 30-year-old southpaw produced roughly as expected in his first season with the Angels, posting a 9-8 record, 4.02 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 109/46 K/BB ratio in 150 innings. He'll best be used as a matchup play in mixed leagues again next season.

Jason Vargas was hammered for a season-high eight runs in 4 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Astros. Vargas was very shaky, allowing nine hits while hitting two batters. He was pulled after loading the bases in the fifth inning and all three runners eventually came around to score after Cory Rasmus gave up a grand slam to Matt Dominguez. Vargas owns a 5.54 ERA in seven starts since returning from the disabled list. He'll get the Athletics next week in Oakland.

Jason Vargas wasn't fooling anyone on Tuesday, as he coughed up five runs on 10 hits in four innings to the Rays. He struck out three and walked two. The left-hander had looked spectacular in his last two outings, both wins, allowing only one run over 13 1/3 frames. Vargas isn't going to have an easy time putting the pieces together on Sunday against the vaunted Rangers.
