Jason Vargas (arm) hopes to be cleared to play catch on Wednesday. Vargas is two weeks removed from surgery to remove a blood clot from his left armpit. The Angels haven't placed a timetable on his return, but he seems likely to be ready to rejoin the rotation by the end of the month.

Jason Vargas whiffed a season-best nine batters and surrendered a mere two runs over seven innings in Monday's 11-3 win against the Mariners. Vargas allowed four hits and a walk to his former club. Monday's strikeouts are clearly a bonus for owners -- Vargas has struck out about six batters per nine innings this year -- but Vargas has established himself as a rotation stalwart in his first season in LA. He's now 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA.

Jason Vargas allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings in a loss to the Orioles on Tuesday. Vargas had a rough outing against the Cubs his last time out but bounced back Tuesday to register a quality start. Still, he wasn't terribly sharp, as he struck out only one batter on the evening while allowing seven hits and a walk. His next start will come Monday against the Mariners.

Jason Vargas allowed five runs over five innings, taking a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Vargas still hasn't lost since April 28 with the no-decision, but it did snap a string of four-straight starts in which the left-hander went at least seven innings allowing two or fewer runs. The Cubs got to Vargas for 11 hits, with the big one, a three-run home run, coming off the bat of Cody Ransom. He'll look to bounce back Tuesday against the Orioles.

Jason Vargas pitched well in Friday's victory over the Royals, allowing just two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings. Vargas also walked four on the night while punching out a pair. Miguel Tejada tagged him for a solo homer in the second inning, and Chris Getz added an RBI single in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage. He's been one of the lone bright spots in the Halo's rotation this season, posting a 4-3 record, 3.43 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. He'll go in search of his third consecutive win when he takes on the Dodgers at home on Wednesday.
