DeGrom threw only fastballs in this session, but is expected to add breaking pitches in another session that will occur mid-week. The right-hander said that his progress is "very encouraging," and if all goes well, he should return to the rotation this weekend. At the moment, the mostly likely day for his next start would be Saturday against the Dodgers.

It's too early to speculate as to how long deGrom will be out, but the words "shoulder soreness" for a pitcher are never a good thing, though deGrom doesn't believe it's anything serious. If deGrom misses just the one outing, Carlos Torres will fill in. If it's multiple starts, Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero could get the call to fill in.

DeGrom allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk through six innings Thursday against the Nationals. He struck out four and didn't receive a decision in the eventual extra-inning loss. Two-thirds of the damage against DeGrom came on a two-run homer off the bat of Ian Desmond -- the first home run in more than two months allowed by the 26-year-old rookie. The last homer he'd given up was a two-run jack by Cubs pitcher Travis Wood back on June 5, and he's allowed just six homers in 16 starts for the Mets this year. He's still won five straight decisions, and will look to make it six on Tuesday in a rematch with Washington.
