Gio Gonzalez pitched well in a losing effort against the Yankees on Friday, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings of work while walking two and striking out eight.
It was the sixth time of the season that Gonzalez has struck out at least eight in a game. Both of the runs he allowed came across in the second inning, on a pair of RBI singles from Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher. With the loss, Gonzalez falls to 8-3 on the season, though he still owns a remarkable 2.52 ERA and 97/32 K/BB ratio. His strikeout total trials only Justin Verlander and Stephen Strasburg for the major league lead. He'll look to get back in the win column when he squares off against the Rays at home on Thursday.

Gio Gonzalez allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks in just 4 2/3 innings of Sunday's loss to the Braves.
Gonzalez fanned five, but couldn't consistently find the strike zone in failing to complete at least five innings of work for the first time since his first start of the year. He needed 91 pitches to record his 14 outs. Gonzalez's ERA remains a stellar 2.31, but true to his career form, he's issued 28 free passes in just 66 1/3 innings. That's a hard way to keep such a low ERA. Gonzalez will get the Orioles in Baltimore next weekend.

Gio Gonzalez is nursing soreness in his right (non-throwing) hand.
Gonzalez injured himself when he made an awkward slide into third base last week. As a precaution, the Nationals instructed him not to swing the bat during his start Friday. It didn't affect his pitching, though, and it should be a non-issue going forward.

Gio Gonzalez shut out the Padres for six innings to earn a win Tuesday night.
Gonzalez might have had another inning left in him, but with two men on in what was still a scoreless game in the top of the seventh, the Nationals opted to pinch-hit for him. It worked, too, as Chad Tracy came through with a two-run single. Gonzalez is now 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA.

Gio Gonzalez was brilliant again Tuesday, tossing seven shutout innings on just two hits and two walks while striking out eight in a 1-0 win over the Astros.
The Astros got a runner to third base in the sixth, but it was the only time they got someone past first base all night. The pitcher's duel between Gonzalez and Wandy Rodriguez was completed in just two hours and 12 minutes. Gonzalez's bullpen kept him from a win the last time out, but he now boasts a 2.04 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 21/5 K/BB ratio over his first 17 2/3 innings as a Nat. He'll get the Marlins on Sunday.

Gio Gonzalez shut out the Reds for seven innings in a no-decision Thursday.
Gonzalez was outstanding in allowing just two hits, walking none and striking out seven. Still, he did get the W after Brad Lidge blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth. It was still a nice bounce-back performance after a rough Nationals debut last week against the Cubs.
