The Angels hope to retain free agent starter Jason Vargas, but they won't him a three-year contract.
They also won't exceed an average annual value of $10 million for the 30-year-old left-hander, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. "We obviously have interest in having Jason back," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. "This is the process and it's playing itself out, and we'll honor that. Obviously Jason earned the right to see what was out there in free agency. We'll maintain a rhetoric with him and do have interest in him returning. I think it's a mutual interest." The Angels declined to tender Vargas a qualifying offer out of fear that he'd accept the one-year, $14.1 million pact. The southpaw posted a 4.02 ERA and 1.39 WHIP this season.
