James Shields told Jim Bowden on Sirius XM that he hasn't had any discussions with the Royals about a contract extension, but is open to staying in Kansas City.
The 31-year-old right-hander went 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 196/68 K/BB ratio over a league-high 228 2/3 innings during his first season with the Royals. He's slated to hit free agency after the 2014 season, so if the Royals are unable to work out an extension before the season, he could become a candidate to be traded at the deadline.

Royals exercised RHP James Shields' $13.5 million club option for the 2014 season.
It was an easy decision for the Kansas City front office after Shields registered a 3.15 ERA and 196/68 K/BB ratio across 228 2/3 innings in 2013. He'll be the ace of the Royals' starting rotation again next season.

James Shields spun seven innings of one-run ball and struck out 10 batters in a 6-1 win over the White Sox on Friday.
Shields was dominant, allowing just four hits and one walk. The lone run scored on a solo homer by Gordon Beckham in the bottom of the sixth inning. While the Royals will fall short in their efforts to make the postseason, Shields has done his job as the staff ace, posting a 3.15 ERA and 196/68 K/BB ratio over 228 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander is under team control for one more year.

James Shields (arm) played catch Monday and expects to be fine for his next scheduled start on Friday.
Shields has some swelling after taking a line drive off his pitching arm during Sunday's start. He remained in that game, though, and is in danger of being scratched Friday, especially if the Royals are still fighting for a playoff spot at that point.

James Shields shut out the Rangers for eight innings in a no-decision Sunday.
Shields had the big day despite striking out just two batters. But that's happened a few times this year; he's pitched a total of 22 scoreless innings in his three starts with less than three strikeouts. Shields didn't get the win for his latest strong effort; it's the sixth time this year he's allowed one or no runs and gotten a no-decision or a loss.

James Shields struck out 10 while allowing one run in six innings Monday in a victory over the Indians.
Lonnie Chisenhall's fifth-inning homer was the only damage. It was the first homer allowed by Shields in eight starts. With wins in eight of his last 11 starts, Shields has improved from 4-7 to 12-9 this season. His ERA, though, has actually increased slightly in the span, going from 3.24 to 3.33.

James Shields pitched eight innings of two-run ball to beat the Indians for his 11th win on Wednesday.
Credit the Royals for bouncing back from Monday's heartbreaker to take two out of three in Cleveland. Shields did some rebounding himself after allowing 14 hits and 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Tigers last time out. However, he's now 5-1 with no homers allowed in his last seven starts.

James Shields was destroyed in Friday's loss to the Tigers, allowing 10 runs on 14 hits over his 3 2/3 innings of work.
Shields walked a pair and struck out six in the abysmal outing that saw his ERA rise from 3.03 to 3.43. The impressive thing from the Tigers' end is that they did so much damage without use of the long ball, stringing together 11 singles and three doubles. Big Game James will try to put this one behind him and get back in the win column when he does battle against the Indians in Cleveland on Wednesday.
