James Shields spun seven innings of one-run ball and struck out 10 batters in a 6-1 win over the White Sox on Friday. Shields was dominant, allowing just four hits and one walk. The lone run scored on a solo homer by Gordon Beckham in the bottom of the sixth inning. While the Royals will fall short in their efforts to make the postseason, Shields has done his job as the staff ace, posting a 3.15 ERA and 196/68 K/BB ratio over 228 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander is under team control for one more year.
