Steve Mason earned his first win of the season stopping 33 of 34 shots in the Flyers' 2-1 victory over Florida. Mason's record improves to 1-2-0 with a .935 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average through three starts. The 25 year-old seems to have backed up his claim as the Flyers' new starter in the early goings this season.

New Philadelphia goalie Steve Mason turned aside 32 shots but still took the loss as the Flyers were edged 2-1 by the Hurricanes in Carolina Sunday. Mason hasn't played that poorly but has yet to win a game. His goals-against-average is .941.

Steve Mason looks likely to get the nod for the Philadelphia Flyers against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Neither Mason nor Ray Emery did well enough in their respective season debuts to really move the needle one way or another, so it makes sense that the Flyers are sticking with a rotation for now. So far, it's hard to argue in favor of either one of them.

Steve Mason was "honored" to be selected as the Flyers' starter for their season opener on Wednesday. Mason turned aside 22 of 25 shots in a 3-1 loss, but he didn't end up receiving much blame for the defeat. "He did well," captain Claude Giroux said. "He kept us in the game, made some big saves for us. Anytime your goalie does that for you, you're going to have a chance to win." Ray Emery will probably get his first start on Saturday or Sunday.

Steve Mason allowed three goals on 25 shots Wednesday as the Flyers dropped a 3-1 decision to Toronto. Mason wasn't especially good in this game and despite receiving the surprise start in the Flyers opener, it's likely we'll see Ray Emery in Philadelphia's second outing.

Steve Mason will play between the pipes in the Philadelphia Flyers' season opener. "We had to have a starting point here," Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said. "Steve came in last year and really played terrific for us." Ultimately, Mason and Ray Emery will be splitting the goaltending duties unless one of them is able to clearly outshine the other. So while Mason will play on Wednesday, Emery won't have to wait long for his first opportunity.

Steve Mason will likely get the start in the Flyer pre-season opener Sunday against Toronto in London, Ontario. Ray Emery is not on Sunday's roster and will likely be between the pipes to start Monday's return engagement agasinst the Maple Leafs. There will be an interesting battle for the starting goalie gig in Philly but we will give the intial edge to Mason.

Steve Mason is considered to be Philadelphia's number one goalie right now after word that the team is set to buy out the remainder of Ilya Bryzgalov's contract. However, Mason is still preparing himself to battle for starts with whoever the Flyers bring in to replace Bryzgalov. GM Paul Holmgren said, "Ideally, we'd be able to get a guy that would work in tandem with him, but the bulk [would go] onto Steve. We'll see how it goes." Some possibilities could be Jose Theodore, Ray Emery, Evgeni Nabokov, or Dan Ellis.

Steve Mason is expected to compete for playing time with Ilya Bryzgalov next season if the two of them remain the fold together. There has been plenty of speculation about the future of Bryzgalov in Philadelphia, but some healthy competition and extra rest may benefit him next year and Mason can provide that. In seven appearances with the Flyers, Mason posted a 1.90 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage while earning four wins. He benefited from the change from Columbus to Philadelphia, but the jury is still out on him. Having him and Bryzgalov work off each other might be the best course of action for the Flyers heading into the 2013-14 campaign.
