The Anaheim Ducks made it clear that John Gibson will start in net against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5.
Not really a huge surprise considering Gibson is coming off of a shutout, although the Ducks have seen enough turmoil (and injury-related changes) that it seems like anything was plausible. Gibson gets a chance to run with the ball as the Ducks are now very much in their series against the Kings.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said that Game 4 was the best time to start rookie goaltender John Gibson.
Boudreau did not want to start Jonas Hiller in Game 4, have him struggle, and then force Gibson to start Game 5 with the Ducks down three games to one. So he started the rookie in Game 4 and watched him shutout the Kings to even the series at two. Gibson is most likely to start Game 5 on Tuesday. The Ducks became the first team since the 2008 Montreal Canadiens to start two rookies in net in the same series as both Gibson and Frederik Andersen are in their first season. Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak did the same for the Habs.

John Gibson set aside 28 shots as the Ducks topped the Kings in Game 4 of their second-round series 2-0 on Saturday night.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau, with Frederik Andersen injured, made the surprising choice to go with the rookie over veteran Jonas Hiller for his first playoff start -- and first start period since April 13. All the 20-year-old did was stand on his head for much of the game in recording his second NHL shutout. It was simply a sensational performance for Gibson, who showed great poise on the road and was positionally sound throughout. The series is now tied at two apiece, and it will shift to Anaheim for Game 5 on Monday. Gibson, who in three regular-season starts had a 1.33 goals-against average and .954 save percentage, figures to be between the pipes then.

With Frederik Anderson (lower-body) hurt and unlikely to play today, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau isn't denying that youngster John Gibson could be his starting goalie for Game 4 of the team's playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Gibson, promoted from AHL Norfolk to Anaheim Friday because Andersen left Thursday's 3-2 win over LA with his injury, had only three late-season starts, but all were wins and one was a shutout. And Gibson, who's won big games for Team USA at the world championship level, has been starring in Norfolk's playoffs. "He's always an option if he's called up," Boudreau said. Instead of starting the experienced Jonas Hiller, Boudreau had Andersen start in the first round against Dallas and stuck with him despite his inconsistency. But the chances of Andersen being available aren't likely, at least right now. And Boudreau is one willing to take a risk. "I fully believe that Gibson can play and I fully believe that Hiller can play," Boudreau said. "It's quite a gamble if you use Gibson. I've done it before. You live and die with the way you feel, I guess."

The Anaheim Ducks have promoted John Gibson.
Frederik Andersen left Thursday's game due to a lower-body injury. It's not clear if Andersen will be available for Game 4, but if nothing else, Gibson will serve as an insurance policy.

The Anaheim Ducks clearly feel comfortable with their current goalie setup, as they sent John Gibson to the AHL.
Clearly, the Ducks' worries are no longer there for Frederik Andersen and Jonas Hiller right now. It was a little surprising Anaheim's situation was so wide open to begin with. We'll see if it's Hiller - Andersen if the Ducks have a deep playoff run.

The NHL selected John Gibson as the second star of the week on Monday.
He played in the first three games of his NHL career and made a great first impression. Gibson went 3-0-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average, .954 save percentage and one shutout. He's an outstanding prospect and it probably won't be long before he is Anaheim's starting goaltender.

Rookie goalie John Gibson turned aside 36 of 38 shots in Anaheim's 5-2 win over San Jose Wednesday night.
Gibson, 20, got the start over the struggling Jonas Hiller in the biggest game of the season for Anaheim in a lively playoff atmosphere and made 36 saves. He has stopped 54 of 56 shots in two NHL games and makes Anaheim's goaltending situation even more interesting.
