Stephen Drew (ankle) went through a hard workout Saturday at Chase Field that included extensive time on the basepaths.
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said that while Drew felt a "little sore" on Sunday, he's recovering better from his more rigorous workout days. "He actually bounced back real well so I'm encouraged at the pace and the rate he's bouncing back," said Gibson. "He looks much stronger and he seems to bounce back much quicker." No word on when Drew will go out on a minor league rehab assignment, but this might be a good time to stash him on a DL spot.

Stephen Drew (ankle) took grounders and participated in batting practice Monday at Chase Field.
"It's going good," said Drew, who began playing in extended spring training games last week. "I'm trying not to press too much, but I'm making progress." Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he looked "phenomenal" on Monday, but is "not as far along as you'd hope he'd be." There's no formal timeline for his return.

Stephen Drew (ankle) is expected to play in another extended spring training game over the weekend.
"Hopefully we can progress him," manager Kirk Gibson said after Drew went 1-for-4 in an extended spring game on Thursday. "He didn't seem to be concerned with anything." Drew also played for six outs in the field, and encountered no issues running to first. "I still have to build up - I basically only played one inning," Drew told MLB.com. "It's not like you can shove yourself into a game after one inning. I didn't have any setbacks, but we're going through the training right now."

Stephen Drew (ankle) went 1-for-4 in an extended spring training game Thursday.
It was his first game action since undergoing ankle surgery last July. While he didn't run the bases or play in the field, he's certainly moving in the right direction. The 29-year-old shortstop is unlikely to come off the disabled list until May. Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald will continue to fill in at shortstop for now.

Stephen Drew (ankle) is scheduled to take four at-bats Thursday in an extended spring game.
Drew will jog lightly out of the box after contact but won't run the bases. He's also not expected to play the field at any point Thursday. The 29-year-old shortstop seems doubtful to join the Diamondbacks' starting lineup until May. Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald will continue to fill in at shortstop for the Snakes.

Diamondbacks placed SS Stephen Drew on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26, with a right ankle injury.
Drew broke his right ankle on a play at home plate last July and still isn't fully recovered. The D'Backs aren't sure when he's going to be ready for major-league action. Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald will handle shortstop duties for the time being.

Stephen Drew met Tuesday with the Diamondbacks' medical staff, manager Kirk Gibson and general manager Kevin Towers to discuss his progress from right ankle surgery.
Drew recently ran the bases for the first time since the surgery last July, but the timetable for his return remains very vague. The hope is that he may soon head over to extended spring training, where he figures to start out with one at-bat with light running, no sliding and an inning or two of defense. However, it's tough to pin down a specific time frame until he can increase his baseball activities without lingering discomfort. Willie Bloomquist will take his place in the starting lineup for now.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said shortstop Stephen Drew (ankle) is likely to start the season on the disabled list.
"He's probably not going to be ready," Gibson said. "I don't know how long. Don't keep asking me. When he's ready, you'll know." Drew is still feeling a lot of soreness and tightness in his surgically-repaired right ankle. "I get the sense," writes Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, "they're still hoping he can play in a Cactus League game, but it's not really clear if that's realistic or not."

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson told reporters Tuesday that he plans to push Stephen Drew "pretty good this week" to test the status of his right ankle.
Drew has been limited to only light jogging and weight room workouts since arriving in Diamondbacks camp due to lingering concerns about the ankle fracture that he suffered last July. If the 28-year-old shortstop is unable to appear in a Cactus League game soon, the Snakes will have no choice but to rule him out for Opening Day.

Stephen Drew (ankle) indicated Thursday that he might not be ready for the start of the regular season.
Drew suffered a fractured right ankle last July while sliding into home plate. "The doctor said it was going to be a year process, and now I'm at month seven," the 28-year-old shortstop told MLB.com. "Flexibility is back to normal. Now I just have to get the strength back." Perhaps he'll try to play through the initial weakness.
