Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Wednesday that he plans to continue sitting Stephen Drew in certain matchups. Drew has sat two out of the last three times that the Diamondbacks have faced a left-handed starter. While Gibson's main motivation is giving his players regular rest, he indicated that it will likely continue. "Stephen wants to play every day," said Gibson. "But it makes more sense to match up lefties and righties at certain positions right now." We would mind more if Drew was producing, but he's batting just .171 with one home run over his last 18 games. This arrangement probably won't last long, but keep a close eye on Gibson's lineup card.

Stephen Drew is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Brewers. Willie Bloomquist will make the start at shortstop Tuesday and bat leadoff against the southpaw Randy Wolf. Perhaps we shouldn't look too much into things yet, but it's the second time in the past three games against a left-handed starter that Drew has found himself on the bench. He is batting .237 with a .709 OPS against southpaws this season.

Stephen Drew launched a solo homer on Wednesday in the Diamondbacks' 6-2 setback to the Indians. He finished the game 1-for-4. Drew rocketed out of the gate this season, hitting .324 with two homers and 20 RBI in his first 20 games. In his 53 games since, he's 49-for-200 (.245) with three homers and 23 RBI.

Stephen Drew was 1-for-4 and hit into two double plays in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Royals. Drew has six hits in his last 38 at-bats (.158) and has not driven in a run during this nine-game span in which the Diamondbacks have averaged a decent 4.1 runs per game. He is now hitting .274/.348/.419 with four home runs, which is okay for a major league shortstop, but his power numbers are headed in the wrong direction.
