This is a technicality, as we knew Newcomb would be starting one half of Saturday's doubleheader. He makes for an appealing stream in deep leagues, given his filthy stuff and strikeout potential, but he is a major ratio risk. Newcomb faces Robert Gsellman in the doubleheader.

The pitching prospect was scratched from his scheduled start with Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, and there's now confirmation that it was done to prepare him for his major-league debut Saturday. No official word has come forth on whether Newcomb will pitch game 1 or 2 of the twinbill, although Mark Bowman of MLB.com also notes that game 1 makes the most sense if another starter (potentially Matt Wisler) is called up as the 26th man for the nightcap.

This seems to be a good indication that Newcomb is headed to the major leagues in short order to replace Bartolo Colon (oblique) in the rotation. Newcomb continues to battle control issues in the minors (5.2 BB/9 this season, 4.8 BB/9 for career), but he's been able to minimize the damage from the free passes by missing bats at an excellent clip (11.5 K/9) and limiting the long ball.

Newcomb allowed two hits and four walks over five scoreless innings for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday white striking out six but came away with a no-decision in a loss to Rochester.

EDGE Analysis

The big lefty, Atlanta's No. 15 prospect, continues to post big strikeout and big walk numbers, managing a 24:13 K:BB through his first 19.1 innings for Gwinnett this season. Newcomb's raw stuff is major-league quality, but until the 23-year-old learns to get his pitches over the plate more often he remains something of a long shot to ever become a regular member of the Braves' rotation.

This is basically the procedural confirmation of something expected to happen all spring. Expect him to start 2017 at Triple-A Gwinnett. The promising left-hander is considered an important piece of Atlanta's future but must conquer the control issues that cloud his once lofty prospect status. The next year or two may determine whether the 23-year-old will polish his makeup and manage a starter's workload. If gone uncorrected, Newcomb's flaws may keep him in the bullpen in the long term.

Despite leading the Southern League in strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to a .238 BAA, Newcomb's ERA remains on the high side due to a plethora of walks. The continued free passes will only further hinder his progress as he ascends to the higher levels.

Newcomb, 22, has a 3.47 ERA and 58:33 K:BB through 57 innings for Double-A Mississippi.

EDGE Analysis

The additional baserunners have come back to haunt Newcomb a bit this season, though he is still striking out more than one batter per inning. In addition, he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four outings.

Newcomb, 22, has a 2.94 ERA and 61:25 K:BB ratio in 49 innings since being promoted to High-A Inland Empire. Newcomb has been dominant in his first full season in the Angels organization. Opposing batters are hitting just .216 against him in 2015. He is walking a few too many batters, but it has not really hurt him thus far. The ability to induce ground balls has also helped to limit the damage. Newcomb is undoubtedly the top prospect for the Halos.

Newcomb has a 0.84 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP with 11 strikeouts in two starts (10.2 innings) with High-A Inland Empire. The 21-year-old southpaw was promoted to High-A earlier this month and has put a hurt on the California League through two starts. Newcomb has had one of the more impressive starts to 2015 among players from the 2014 draft class and should be considered a no-doubt top-100 prospect in dynasty leagues at this point.
