Newcomb allowed a single unearned run on four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters over 6.1 innings during Saturday's loss to the Mets. He didn't factor into the decision.
EDGE Analysis
The Mets have an admirable offense, so this was an encouraging debut for the lefty, and especially in the strikeouts column. Newcomb posted a 2.97 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 11.5 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9 with Triple-A Gwinnett through 11 starts, so if he can locate his spots and limit the free passes, there is oodles of upside. He's probably best viewed as a high-risk, high-reward option until proven otherwise, but Atlanta also has every reason to hand him him a rotation spot if he earns it. If the rookie sticks in the rotation for another turn, a home start against the Marlins is on deck.
