Newcomb struck out three in a perfect inning to earn the save in Friday's 3-0 win over the Reds.
EDGE Analysis
This was Newcomb's second save of the season -- his other was against the Angels on Aug. 16. The Athletics are using a closing committee to finish off games since the trade deadline, and they've tallied just 31 saves overall this year, with 20 of those coming from Mason Miller prior to the deal that sent him to San Diego. Newcomb and Hogan Harris appear to be the current favorites for saves, though volume will remain an issue. On the season, Newcomb has a 2.76 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 91:31 K:BB over 91.1 innings across 47 outings (five starts) between the Athletics and the Red Sox.

Newcomb allowed an unearned run on two hits and a hit batsman and struck out three without walking a batter over 1.2 innings to earn the save in Saturday's 7-2 win over the Angels.
EDGE Analysis
Tyler Ferguson put two runners on in the eighth inning, but Newcomb was able to defuse the situation. Newcomb then allowed a run in the ninth, but the Athletics' lead was never in any real danger after the team padded the lead in the eighth. This was Newcomb's first save since the 2021 campaign with Atlanta. He's allowed just the one unearned run over his last nine appearances, a stretch that covers 11.2 innings with a 16:3 K:BB. He's in a late-inning role for now, but the Athletics' overall struggles make saves hard to come by. Newcomb has maintained a 2.97 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 82:28 K:BB over 78.2 innings across 38 appearances (five starts) between the Athletics and the Red Sox this year.

Newcomb pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and a walk in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Orioles.
EDGE Analysis
Newcomb extended his scoreless outings streak to seven straight appearances, surrendering four hits and three walks, while striking out 12 batters over nine innings during that stretch. The left-hander has been vaulted into a late-inning role with the A's, helping fill the void of Mason Miller, who was dealt to the Padres at the trade deadline. Newcomb now owns a 3.08 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 78 punchouts over 36 appearances, including five starts, with the Red Sox and Athletics in 2025. He remains in the mix for high-leverage appearances with Michael Kelly and Elvis Alvarado, both of whom are right-handed, setting Newcomb up for matchup-based chances against left-handed batters.

The Athletics acquired Newcomb from the Red Sox on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations.
EDGE Analysis
The left-hander was designated for assignment by Boston over the weekend, but he found a new home on an MLB roster. Newcomb opened the season in the Red Sox's rotation before shifting to a long-relief role, and overall he had a 3.95 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 41:17 K:BB across 41 innings. The 31-year-old spent the 2023 and 2024 campaigns with the Athletics but pitched in just 14 games (two starts).

The Red Sox designated Newcomb for assignment Saturday.
EDGE Analysis
The move makes room on the roster for Luis Guerrero, who the Red Sox recalled from Triple-A Worcester. Newcomb has a 3.83 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB across 40 innings this season, but he has yielded seven runs (six earned) over his last 12.1 frames.

Newcomb allowed an earned run on one hit and two walks over two innings of relief Wednesday in the Red Sox's 5-1 loss to the Mets.
EDGE Analysis
Newcomb claimed a spot in the Boston rotation coming out of spring training but has been working exclusively out of the bullpen since late April after turning in a 4.43 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB in 22.1 innings over his five starts. His results over the past month as a reliever have been only marginally better (3.06 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 14:5 K:BB in 17.2 innings over six appearances), but Newcomb could nonetheless find himself in the mix for a spot start or bulk-relief appearance in the near future. As a result of postponements Thursday and Friday, the Red Sox will begin a stretch of six games in five days Saturday and will need to break in a temporary sixth starter at some point.

Newcomb (0-3) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings as the Red Sox fell 8-5 to the Mariners. He struck out eight.
EDGE Analysis
The Ks were a season high for the southpaw and he completed five innings for the first time, but Newcomb also served up his first homer of the season -- a three-run shot by J.P. Crawford in the fourth inning -- and he's issued multiple walks in all five of his outings. With Lucas Giolito (hamstring) set to come off the IL next week, Newcomb may have made his last start for Boston, but it's not clear if he'll shift to the bullpen or get bumped off the 26-man roster when that happens. Through 22.1 innings, Newcomb carries a 4.43 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 27:11 K:BB.

Newcomb didn't factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rays after allowing four hits and two walks in 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four.
EDGE Analysis
Despite falling one out shy of nabbing the potential win, Newcomb scattered four singles and didn't allow a single runner to reach third base during his time on the bump. Through 17.1 innings (four starts) this season, the journeyman southpaw holds a solid 3.63 ERA and 19:9 K:BB but a concerning 1.90 WHIP. Newcomb will be looking to work into the fifth inning for the first time this year in his next time out, currently slated for next week at home against the Mariners.

Newcomb (0-2) allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out six over four innings to take the loss against the White Sox on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
The Red Sox's defense committed five errors, but the mostly cost one came as part of the White Sox's four-run fourth inning. This got Newcomb's pitch count up to 94 (60 strikes), and the offense didn't bail him out. He's now failed to complete five innings in all three of his starts this season, posting a 4.97 ERA, 2.13 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB over 12.2 innings. He'll continue to struggle as long as he's putting that much traffic on the bases. Newcomb is likely to stay in the rotation for at least one more turn, as Brayan Bello (shoulder) and Lucas Giolito (hamstring) could need one additional rehab start each. Newcomb's next start is projected to be on the road versus the Rays.

Newcomb did not factor in the decision during a loss to St. Louis in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. He allowed one run on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings and struck out five batters.
EDGE Analysis
Newcomb wasn't very efficient but was able to limit the damage and escape a couple of threats. He kept the Cardinals off the board until Masyn Winn's RBI single in the fourth inning. Newcomb has been tagged with 14 hits through 8.2 innings so far, resulting in a 5.19 ERA. His next start is projected to be a road matchup against the White Sox.
