Matt Cain turned in the worst start of his career Friday against the Dodgers, giving up eight runs in 2 1/3 innings. Cain had allowed nine runs twice before -- both times against the Cardinals -- but this is the highest ERA he's ever produced in a start. It comes after a five-start run in which he allowed a total of seven runs in 34 2/3 innings. We wouldn't take it as a sign that his ERA is about to jump over 5.00 again. He should certainly be better against the Mets in his final start before the All-Star break.

Matt Cain threw eight innings of one-run ball Saturday in a no-decision against the Rockies. Cain got very little support from the Giants offense in an eventual 2-1 loss. The right-hander was fantastic, scattering three hits (one double, two singles) while striking out five. He will carry an improving 4.29 ERA and 1.07 WHIP into his next start against the Reds.

Matt Cain gave up three runs over six innings in a loss Sunday against the Marlins. Cain was coming off a 10 strikeout performance in his last outing, but was handed his fourth loss of the season despite the quality start. He's now given up just six earned runs over his last 26 2/3 innings. Cain will make his next start Saturday vs. the Rockies.

Matt Cain was denied a win after holding the Padres to two runs in seven innings and striking out a season-high 10 on Tuesday. Cain left with a one-run lead, but that was blown by Jeremy Affeldt in the eighth. He's allowed just three runs over 20 2/3 innings in his last three starts, lowering his ERA from 5.45 to 4.55. He did have a streak of five straight starts without allowing a homer snapped when he gave up two solo shots tonight.

Matt Cain allowed two hits over 6 2/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a shutout of the Pirates on Thursday. Cain wasn't efficient enough to pitch deep into this one, but it was a second straight strong outing for him. He's lowered his ERA from 5.45 to 4.70 by allowing one run and six hits over 13 2/3 innings in his last two starts.

Matt Cain was charged with one run in seven-plus innings Friday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks. Bruce Bochy deserves some of the blame for this one. Why send Cain back out for the eighth if you're just going to pull him after a single? Cain had a shutout going through seven, but he was removed as soon as he gave up a hit to A.J. Pollock to begin the eighth. Jeremy Affeldt came in and, after getting two outs, walked Willie Bloomquist and gave up a three-run homer to Paul Goldschmidt, a guy he probably wouldn't have faced had Santiago Casilla been healthy.

Matt Cain was tagged for seven runs in six innings Saturday in a loss to the Cardinals. Cain was done in by a seven-run third inning. Oddly enough, he was perfect in every other frame. He struck out nine and walked none in the loss and saw his ERA rise from 5.00 to 5.45 on the year. He'll hope for better luck next time out against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

Matt Cain allowed two earned runs over five innings in his start Sunday against Colorado. He gave up just two hits, walked five, and had six strikeouts. Cain struggled with his command early and needed 107 pitches to get through five innings. It's the second straight outing in which he's allowed two earned runs. Cain's next start will come Friday vs. the Cardinals.

Matt Cain won despite allowing six runs in 6 1/3 innings Thursday versus the Rockies at Coors Field. All of the runs came on homers: Todd Helton and Wilin Rosario hit back-to-back jacks in the second, while Wilin Rosario followed with a three-run shot in the third. Cain ended up striking out six and walking two. Tonight was a setback as far as his ERA is concerned, but only a little one.

Matt Cain won his second straight start by holding the Braves to two runs and three hits over eight innings on Friday. After going 0-2 with a 6.49 ERA in April, Cain has opened May by allowing three runs and eight hits over 15 1/3 innings. He has a tough start against the Rockies at Coors Field up next, but he's typically pitched well there in his career (5-3, 4.11 ERA in 11 starts).
