Matt Cain left Thursday's start against the Pirates after taking a line drive off his right forearm. Cain had a very brief conversation with Giants manager Bruce Bochy and the team's trainer after taking the Gaby Sanchez's liner before walking off the field. The club should provide an update on his status later Thursday.

Matt Cain held the Marlins to two runs in seven innings Saturday in the Giants' 6-4 victory. Cain was sharp, yielding just four hits and two walks while fanning five. The right-hander has a 2.51 ERA since the All-Star break and will try to continue his big second-half turnaround next week against the Pirates.

Matt Cain gave up three runs on five hits over seven innings in his start Sunday against the Orioles. Cain was hit with his eighth loss despite the quality start and has now went at least seven innings in each of his last four outings. His lone mistake came on a two-run shot to J.J. Hardy, but he was otherwise a victim of poor run support. Cain will have a much easier matchup in his next start Saturday vs. the Marlins.

Matt Cain allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings on Tuesday in a loss to the Brewers. He whiffed six and didn't surrender a free pass. Cain served up a Carlos Gomez solo home run in the second, the first round-tripper he's allowed since June 23. Cain has been charged with only nine runs over his last five starts covering 27 innings. His rapidly-declining 4.47 ERA still doesn't look as nice, however, as his shiny 1.14 WHIP.

Thanks to a ninth-inning rally, Matt Cain picked up his seventh win after allowing one run over eight innings Thursday against the Phillies. Cain was outpitched by Cole Hamels, but the Giants came through with two runs in the top of the ninth off Jonathan Papelbon to win 2-1. Cain probably has some sympathy for Hamels; he had already had four outings this season in which he allowed one or no runs and took no-decisions.

Matt Cain was denied a win after allowing one run in seven innings and striking out seven Cubs on Friday. A Brandon Belt error doomed the Giants in the ninth, leaving Cain with a no-decision. The good news is that he's pitched effectively in both of his starts since the break, lowering his ERA from 5.06 to 4.79.

Matt Cain allowed two runs over five innings on Saturday to beat the Diamondbacks for his first victory since June 13. On Friday, Bruce Bochy used five relievers to get six outs. Tonight, he used all seven of his relievers behind Cain. It worked out, as the Giants held on to win 4-3. Hopefully, Madison Bumgarner has a long outing in him Sunday, because the Giants are definitely going to need it.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Thursday that Matt Cain is healthy. Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News reported Wednesday that there have been whispers that Cain might be injured, but Bochy says that's not the case. He did mention possible bone spurs that Cain has dealt with for a few years, but says it "hasn't affected him, as far as I know." Cain holds an uncharacteristic 5.06 ERA for the season and lasted just two-thirds of an inning in his last start.

Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News is hearing that there "have been in-house discussions" in recent days about Matt Cain's health. Cain lasted just two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Mets and now has an uncharacteristic 5.06 ERA for the season. It's not clear what ailment the Giants think he might be dealing with or if any tests are planned. For what it's worth, Cain's velocity has been fine this season, but he's certainly been prone to blowup games.

Matt Cain had another brutal outing Wednesday, walking three and giving up three runs in just two-thirds of an inning versus the Mets before being pulled. The obvious answer would seem to be that Cain is hurting, but the Giants didn't report any sort of injury afterwards. Maybe something will be revealed postgame. Cain gave up eight runs in 2 1/3 innings versus the Dodgers in his previous start. Today, he threw 36 pitches -- 18 for strikes -- and was then replaced by Mike Kickham. Cain will at least get the All-Star break to rest up now. He appears to need that and more.
