Jered Weaver took a loss after allowing three runs -- two earned -- in 8 1/3 innings Friday against the A's. The Angels have fallen 3 1/2 games back of the Red Sox with losses the last two days. Weaver gave up a leadoff homer to Jemile Weeks tonight, but he was pretty terrific otherwise. The Angels just couldn't help him. A Maicer Izturis error gave the A's a run in the eighth, and a David DeJesus homer in the ninth made it 3-1 before Weaver was pulled. Weaver lost his chance to win 20 tonight, which could mean he won't make his start next week if the Angels are eliminated from postseason contention.

Jered Weaver pitched seven innings of one-run ball to beat the A's on Wednesday. One would think a Weaver-Rich Harden matchup would feature an abundance of strikeouts, but both starters fanned only one batter today. Overall, there were six strikeouts in the game. But while Weaver didn't miss many bats, he did pick up his 17th victory. He's 3-0 with a 1.21 ERA in four starts against the A's this season.

Jered Weaver is expected to pitch on three days' rest Sunday afternoon against the Orioles. It seems safe to say manager Mike Scioscia won't be trying this again during the final month of the season.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia has confirmed that Ervin Santana and Jered Weaver will pitch on short rest on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. It's the first time either hurler has pitched on three days' rest in their careers, but pitching coach Mike Butcher downplayed the decision. "I know it's not the norm, but it's not like it's something where it's alarming. Or should be alarming," Mike Butcher said. "There's absolutely nothing that's changed, except it's one less day."

Making his first start since signing a five-year, $85 million contract extension on Sunday, Jered Weaver held the White Sox to just four hits in seven scoreless innings of work in an 8-0 Angels victory. He struck out eight and walked two. Weaver needed only 96 pitches to record his 21 outs, which should put him in good shape to start on three days' rest for the first time in his career on Sunday against the Rangers. The Angels should officially announce that he will be doing so some time in the next 48 hours.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia is considering using Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana on short-rest this weekend against the first-place Rangers. "We're going to look at a couple things in our rotation," Scioscia said before Tuesday's game. "We have some idea what it's going to be (for the Texas series). ... We're considering a lot of things for some guys." Scioscia won't make a final decision until Santana and Weaver get through their respective starts this week. Neither has ever started on three days' rest in the major leagues, but the Angels are trying to pick up some ground in the AL West.
