Whitley (elbow) was activated from the DL and optioned to Double-A Montgomery on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 28-year-old righty got progressively better in each of his six rehab appearances and finished 1-0 with a stellar 0.86 ERA and 24 whiffs in 21 innings. The decision to make Montgomery Whitley's next stop as opposed to the big league club was based on the Rays wanting to keep building up his stamina and workload, which he wasn't going to be able to accomplish at the major league level. "We just didn't have the innings right now," (Rays manager Kevin) Cash said. "Could not have been more impressed how he threw the ball in his rehab. You just don't see many guys come back from surgery and go out and have the type of results he had. We've got to get his innings built up going into next year. He's part of the big picture and part of our plans moving forward, without a doubt."

Whitley (elbow) continued his impressive string of rehab appearances on Tuesday, firing six scoreless innings of four-hit ball for High-A Charlotte against Jupiter while striking out six. He also hit a batter.
EDGE Analysis
While the step down in competition from Double-A likely helped, Whitley nevertheless looked impressive while mostly breezing through his six frames on 92 pitches, 67 of which found the strike zone. He's now given up just two earned runs over 21 innings in his rehab work while fanning 24 over that span. Whitley's next step is yet to be determined, but should become known in the coming days.

Whitley (elbow) will make his sixth rehab start for High-A Charlotte on Tuesday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
It would have been hard to draw up the course of Whitley's rehab appearances any better to date. He's increased his workload in terms of both innings and pitch count in each start, while only surrendering two earned runs over 15 innings. Whitley worked up to five innings and 61 pitches last Thursday versus Mobile while with Double-A Montgomery, so Tuesday could potentially bring a six-inning outing if the track he's followed to date is any indication. If he once again emerges without any setbacks, it's not inconceivable that the former Yankee prospect could see a call-up to the big league club before the month is out.

Whitley (elbow) will start Thursday for Double-A Montgomery in what could be his final rehab start, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old excelled in his fourth relief outing last Friday against Tennessee, allowing just an earned run on two hits and two walks over four innings while striking out five. Given his string of increasingly impressive performances, Whitley may have a chance for a call-up to the big league club if Thursday's start goes as well as his four previous appearances.

Whitley (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session with Double-A Montgomery on Tuesday, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The rehabbing reliever has been stellar over three appearances for High-A Charlotte and Montgomery, having yet to be scored upon over six innings and recording nine strikeouts over that span. Whitley's recovery has gone off without a hitch to date, leaving open the possibility of a return to the big league club later this month or in early September.

Whitley (elbow) continued to roll through his rehab appearances, firing three no-hit innings for Double-A Montgomery against Pensacola on Saturday. He walked one but struk out five.
EDGE Analysis
Whitley looked considerably impressive while missing plenty of bats, and got 21 of his 34 pitches into the strike zone. The 27-year-old has been stellar through his first three rehab outings, allowing just two hits over six innings of scoreless ball, while sriking out nine. He's ramped up his workload by both inning and pitch count in each successive appearance, and appears to have emerged from Saturday's outing setback-free.

Whitley (elbow) is scheduled for his next rehab start for High-A Charlotte this coming Saturday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old righty has excelled in his first pair of outings, allowing only two hits over three scoreless innings while striking out four. Whitley could join the Rays at some point in September if he is able to continue building up his stamina and arm strength without setbacks.

Whitley (elbow) turned in a second straight strong rehab outing Sunday for High-A Charlotte, allowing a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings while also recording a strikeout.
EDGE Analysis
The 26-year-old fired 16 of 24 pitches for strikes against Brevard County, his second encouraging performances in as many trips to the mound. Whitley has yet to be scored on over three innings over his first pair of rehab outings, and has surrendered just two hits and a walk while striking out four.

Whitley (elbow) turned in a strong outing in his first rehab appearance for High-A Charlotte on Monday night, striking out the side over an inning of work while giving up a hit.
EDGE Analysis
The Tommy John surgery-recoveree's first game action couldn't have gone much better, with Whitley missing plenty of bats and throwing 12 of his 20 pitches for strikes. The 27-year-old's next appearance will likely come Saturday against Brevard.

Whitley (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Monday at High-A Charlotte, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
After facing hitters over the last two weeks, Whitley was deemed ready to advance to the final phase of his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Monday's appearance will mark his first game action since May 14, 2015, when he was a member of the Yankees' rotation. Given the severe nature of his injury, Whitley figures to require at least a month to build up his arm strength, so even if he excels right away, don't expect the Rays to call him up from the big leagues until September.
