Whitley (1-1) struck out four over four scoreless innings in Saturday's 3-2 Grapefruit League win over the Blue Jays, giving up two hits and one walk.
EDGE Analysis
Whitley was masterful after getting hit around in relief on March 14, as he stymied a Blue Jays lineup that included regulars Troy Tulowitzki, Kendrys Morales and Kevin Pillar. Although he's still competing for a bullpen role, manager Kevin Cash won't rule out using Whitley as a starter. The 27-year-old righty could also make for an outstanding option in long relief, given his ability to eat up innings.

Whitley gave up three earned runs on three hits over 1.2 innings in Monday's 9-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Twins.
EDGE Analysis
Whitley breezed through a 1-2-3 fourth before running into issues in the fifth, when he allowed a leadoff triple to Danny Santana, an RBI double to Benji Gonzalez and a sacrifice fly to Zach Granite. He was charged with one additional run after exiting when Joe Mauer singled pff Justin Marks and drove in inherited runner Ehire Adrianza. For Whitley, it marked yet another ragged outing and pushed his spring ERA to 9.53 over 5.2 frames. Any chance of securing the fifth starter role seem to be remote at the moment, but Whitley could still stick as a reliever to open the regular season if he can get back on track in forthcoming appearances.

Whitley notched four strikeouts and gave up one earned run on two hits over three innings in Wednesday's 9-7 exhibition loss to Team Columbia.
EDGE Analysis
Whitley had encountered some rough sledding in a relief stint against the Red Sox last Thursday, so Wednesday's effort represented a nice bounce-back for the 27-year-old. The right-hander continues his push for a spot on the roster after returning late last season from Tommy John surgery, and he's generated a 6.75 ERA and allowed a .235 BAA in four spring innings thus far while racking up five strikeouts over that span.

Whitley gave up three earned runs on four hits over two innings in Thursday's 19-2 Grapefruit League loss to the Red Sox. He struck out two.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old righty had fired two perfect innings this spring heading into Monday's contest, but fell victim to the same malaise that many of his fellow pitchers did against a hot-hitting Red Sox squad. Whitley surrendered a three-run home run to Hanley Ramirez in the second, and also saw Brock Holt touch him up for a double two batters earlier. Despite the rough outing, Whitley, in his appearances prior to Thursday, had managed to build on the impressive form he flashed last season in his return from Tommy John surgery, so he remains a very viable candidate for the fifth starter role or a bullpen spot.

Whitley is expected to battle Matt Andriese and Jose De Leon for the fifth spot in the rotation in spring training, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old righty made a relatively triumphant late-season major league return from Tommy John surgery in 2016, generating a 2.51 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 15:3 K:BB across 14.1 innings in five appearances. Whitley's longest stint while with the big league club was four innings, which came on the last day of the season against the Rangers, but he also logged a trio of six-inning appearances during his rehab stint in the minors earlier in the campaign. While De Leon is expected to head to Triple-A Durham to start the season, Andriese is generally seen as the favorite for the job heading into spring training. Naturally, Whitley could give manager Kevin Cash something to think about with a successful exhibition slate, rendering the fifth starter battle one of the more intriguing to watch in Rays camp.

Whitley will start Sunday's season finale against the Rangers.
EDGE Analysis
The right-hander has fared well since his early-September promotion (two earned runs, 11 strikeouts in 10.1 innings) and will be rewarded with his first start of the season. Whitley threw a season-high 62 pitches in his most recent outing Tuesday and may be capped around 80-85 pitches or so Sunday.

Whitley earned his third hold of the season by firing 2.2 innings of two-hit, scoreless ball in Thursday's 2-0 victory over the Yankees. He struck out three.
EDGE Analysis
After a largely successful rehab stint in the minors as part of his comeback from May 2015 Tommy John surgery, Whitley has turned in three very solid performances with the big league club. He's allowed only one unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks over 6.2 innings, while also recording six strikeouts over that span. Whitley's outing Thursday was his second against his former Yankees teammates, and he's now been credited with a hold in each of his three appearances.

Manager Kevin Cash indicated that Whitley will pitch in relief Sunday, likely tossing multiple innings, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
Whitley's outing will be his first since May of 2015 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. A former starter for the Yankees, he will pitch out of the bullpen given the depth in the Rays' rotation.

Whitley (elbow) is expected to be used in a multi-inning capacity, with his first appearance potentially coming on Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
The 27-year-old is on the cusp of the final step of his comeback from May 2015 Tommy John surgery after firing 27.2 innings in the minors during his rehab. Whitley's first outing could well come Sunday versus the Yankees, the club with which his injury occurred, in a game that Matt Andriese is scheduled to start.

Whitley was called up by the Rays on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports
EDGE Analysis
Whitley logged 27.2 innings for Double-A Montgomery this year, but has pitched at several levels while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He didn't finish his minor league season on a high note, giving up eight runs Sunday, owns a 2.93 ERA overall at the Double-A level. Whitley logged nearly 100 frames for the Yankees between 2014 and 2015, so the experience could be an asset down the stretch.
