Whitley (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment Monday at High-A Charlotte, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
EDGE Analysis
After facing hitters over the last two weeks, Whitley was deemed ready to advance to the final phase of his rehab from Tommy John surgery. Monday's appearance will mark his first game action since May 14, 2015, when he was a member of the Yankees' rotation. Given the severe nature of his injury, Whitley figures to require at least a month to build up his arm strength, so even if he excels right away, don't expect the Rays to call him up from the big leagues until September.
