He consistently got ahead of hitters, notching first-pitch strikes on all but two of the men he faced, and he now has four consecutive scoreless multi-inning appearances to open 2017. The 27-year-old's ability to eat up innings and his stellar work thus far figure to continue earning him an abundance of opportunity for the foreseeable future.

Whitley earned his first hold of the season in Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Astros, giving up a hit and a walk over a scoreless 1.2 innings.

The 27-year-old righty generated a 1-1 record, 4.15 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 13 innings this spring, and he'd made one start for Durham before being called up, giving up one earned run on a solo home run over three innings. Whitley is expected to be deployed out of the bullpen for the time being but can start in a pinch in needed.

EDGE Analysis

The 27-year-old just missed out on a rotation spot this spring, but with Jake Odorizzi (hamstring) landing on the disabled list, Whitley will get another shot at the major-league level. He has plenty of starting experience, so he seems like a good bet to make some spot starts until Odorizzi returns.
