Alex Avila will undergo tests for a possible concussion.
Avila evidently must have caught a foul ball or two off the mask that shook him up and eventually forced him from the game. He's been sent to the hospital, and the Tigers should have an update on his status Friday. Avila entered Thursday batting .256/.337/.463 with four homers and 23 RBI in 23 games since returning from the DL.

Alex Avila smashed a two-run double in the fifth inning on Friday, powering the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Phillies.
It was Avila's lone hit in three at-bats on the night. Given his extreme struggles against left-handed pitching, he was a very unlikely hero against opposing starter Cole Hamels. The 26-year-old backstop has been a tremendous disappointment this season, hitting just .187/.287/.304 with six homers and 26 RBI.

Alex Avila finished 3-for-4 with two RBI in the Tigers' loss to the Royals on Saturday night.
Avila is still batting just .185/.284/.302 this season and looks like a shell of the guy who slugged 19 homers alongside an .895 OPS in 2011. He's been messing with the mechanics of his swing, which might just be complicating matters. But it did pay off on Saturday.

Alex Avila went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Blue Jays.
Avila has come back from the DL swinging a hot bat, as he had a two-RBI double in his first game back Tuesday. The backstop is still sporting an ugly .182/.277/.318 batting line for the season.
