Alex Avila was able to stay in Thursday after taking a hard foul tip off his mask in the ninth against the A's. Avila has had concussion issues before -- arising from similar incidents -- and he was clearly in some pain after this one. While he finished out the inning, it wouldn't be surprising to see him miss some time.

Alex Avila is not in the Tigers starting lineup for Saturday afternoon's contest against the Twins. Avila was removed late from Friday's game due to a left shin contusion. The injury doesn't appear to be serious enough to require a trip to the disabled list, but he's likely to get Sunday off as well as a precautionary measure. Bryan Holaday will draw the start behind the dish on Saturday.

It's just a routine day of rest for Avila being a day game after a night game. Bryan Holaday will get the start behind the dish against opposing southpaw C.J. Wilson. Avila, who is hitting just .182/.308/.242 with no RBI on the season, should return to the lineup on Sunday.

Alex Avila went 0-for-3 and struck out twice against the Padres on Friday. Avila hit .306 this spring, even though he struck out 22 times in 49 at-bats. The regular season has seen more strikeouts, but no hits to go along with them; he's currently 2-for-19 with 11 strikeouts and four walks in seven games. He'll probably sit out at least one game this weekend with Victor Martinez potentially starting behind the plate.

Alex Avila (back) has been cleared for workouts. Avila sat out a couple of days last week while nursing back spasms. It's something he deals with often and shouldn't affect his readiness for the start of the season.
