Alex Avila is not in the lineup for Sunday's Game 2 of the ALDS against the Athletics. Avila singled and launched a solo homer Saturday, but he batted just .176/.304/.235 against left-handed pitching this season, so Tigers manager Jim Leyland won't let him face A's southpaw Tommy Milone. Gerald Laird is catching Doug Fister and batting ninth.

Alex Avila blasted an opposite-field solo homer of Jarrod Parker, helping to power the Tigers to a 3-1 victory over the A's in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday. Avila finished the night 2-for-3. His solo blast increased the Tigers advantage to 3-1 in the fifth inning providing a valuable insurance run. The young backstop hit just .073 (3-for-41) with a homer and two RBI over 11 games in the postseason a year ago, so it's encouraging to see him get off to such a hot start.

Alex Avila knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Tigers edged the Royals 5-4 on Thursday. The Royals committed five errors today, and the Tigers needed every one of them to eke out of a win. The finale could have been a sixth error, but it was more mental. With the bases loaded and out out, Avila hit a grounder right down the first-base line that Brayan Pena, filling in at first for an injured Eric Hosmer, was able to making a diving grab of. Pena, though, opted to tag first with his glove rather than try to throw home for the force out. The run scored uncontested, ending the game.

Alex Avila (concussion) has been cleared to return to action. Avila suffered a mild concussion and injury to his jaw when he collided with Prince Fielder while trying to field a pop-up on Sunday. "My jaw is going to be sore for another few days," he said. "But I feel more normal. No more headaches." Avila is expected to start Friday against the Twins.

Alex Avila (concussion) is not in the Tigers' lineup again Wednesday. The Tigers again reported Tuesday night that Avila didn't have a concussion, but Jason Beck and Anthony Odoardi of MLB.com say the catcher has a "mild" concussion. He'll have to pass a concussion test before being cleared to return. "He's got to do a bunch of activity or something, and come out of that clean," manager Jim Leyland said. Leyland is hoping to have Avila available this weekend.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Alex Avila (jaw) was out of the lineup Tuesday for the second straight game because "he's medically not ready to play." Avila experienced headaches during batting practice Monday, but Leyland was hoping to have him back in there Tuesday. "I planned on playing Alex today, but I got here and found out he wasn't available," Leyland said. The manager's answer suggests that Avila should be back in the lineup soon.
