Alex Avila smashed a two-run double in the fifth inning on Friday, powering the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Phillies. It was Avila's lone hit in three at-bats on the night. Given his extreme struggles against left-handed pitching, he was a very unlikely hero against opposing starter Cole Hamels. The 26-year-old backstop has been a tremendous disappointment this season, hitting just .187/.287/.304 with six homers and 26 RBI.
