Smith will more than likely square off against his former understudy in Devan Dubnyk, who has been spectacular since claiming the Wild's No. 1 goalie job. Meanwhile, Smith has continued to flounder for the lottery-bound Coyotes, though he did recently help the team end its 10-game losing streak with a strong effort Thursday against Vancouver. Outings of that variety have been too infrequent for Smith, who will carry a horrid 11-31-5 record, 3.30 GAA, and .895 save percentage into Saturday's match.

Smith led the Coyotes out of their 10-game losing streak Thursday, stopping 32 of 34 and then all three in the shootout to come away with a 3-2 win over Vancouver. Smith's first win in nearly a month, dating back to Feb. 9, is a nice morale boost for him and his team, but fantasy owners simply can't trust the veteran netminder this year, what with his horribly inconsistent play and the hole-filled lineup in front of him.

Smith is slated to start Thursday's game against Vancouver, Sportsnet's Dan Murphy reports. Smith is a risky fantasy roll these days, with the low-scoring Coyotes in the midst of franchise record-tying, 10-game losing streak and Smith's last win having occurred back on Feb. 9.

Smith allowed three goals on 34 shots face Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to the Ducks. It was Smith's ninth loss in a row, despite the fact he let in fewer than four goals for the first in three starts. With Coyotes clearly committed to a rebuilding effort, Smith is likely to have a tough time the rest of the way, but considering his 3.33 goals against and .894 save percentage this year you probably gave up on him a while ago.

Smith dropped his eighth straight game Saturday against the Bruins and only saw his team context dip further south when the Coyotes dealt No. 1 center Antoine Vermette to the Blackhawks hours later and top blueliner Keith Yandle to the Rangers on Sunday. With the Coyotes demonstrating no desire to be competitive over the final few weeks of the season, it's hard to imagine many scenarios where Smith will enter the night as a favorite to pick up the win. That certainly won't be the case against the Ducks, who outpace the Coyotes by 40 points in the Western Conference standings.

On almost any other team he would have been benched, but since the Coyotes traded Devan Dubnyk it looks like they will stick with him. With a 3.34 goals against and .894 save percentage, Smith is putting up a below replacement-level performance this year.

Still, Smith made a boatload of highlight-reel-worthy saves in this one, and the final result can be attributed to him being hung out to dry countless times by a Coyotes defense that couldn't avoid turnover or prevent the Rangers from maintaining offensive-zone puck possession.

After several strong performances earlier in February, Smith has struggled recently allowing more than three goals in four of his last five starts with two five goal performances in that stretch. He is playing behind a leaky defense and until he or the team improves he can't be in your lineup.
