The St. Louis Blues demoted Jake Allen back to the AHL. He's been up and down lately but hasn't played in the NHL this season.
This is a clear sign that Jaroslav Halak is healthy enough to at least dress. Brian Elliott has been lights-out lately, so it will be interesting to see how St. Louis proceeds here. Allen isn't a big fantasy factor this season, but that can change once the logjam clears up.

Jake Allen will probably start the 2013-14 campaign in the AHL.
The Blues don't plan to carry three goaltenders like they did for part of last season. "I just think he's got to continue to improve," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I think he's a guy we see daily improvement, weekly improvement, he's a young guy that's learning how to play. He's in the unique position where he probably got games ahead of the curve through necessity last year and took advantage of it. Now everybody is excited." Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott will enter the season as St. Louis' keepers, but Allen does have some value in keeper leagues.

Jake Allen knows he's heading into training camp in a difficult position.
Allen stepped up with a 2.46 GAA and .905 save percentage in 15 games last season as a rookie, but he's far from a lock to make the 2013-14 squad. "It's a situation where we still have (Elliott) and (Halak) up there on one-way deals, so it's a bit of a different situation for me," Allen said. "Obviously you want to be there, but you have to keep things in perspective and bide your time. I had a good season last year, but that's just a step. I think I still have to prove myself in camp." Allen's newly signed two-year deal is a two-way contract next season and will turn into a one-way deal in 2014-15. Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak's contracts are both set to expire in the summer of 2014, so it would make sense if Allen spent the 2013-14 campaign in the minors and then the Blues re-signed one of Elliott and Halak to play alongside Allen in 2014-15. That being said, there's still a chance that all three netminders could make the Blues' team out of training camp.

St. Louis Blues sign goalie Jake Allen to two-year contract.
Beat writer Jeremy Rutherford reports the deal is a two-way contract in year one and a one-way deal in year two. Allen led all rookie goalies with nine wins in 2013 and his 2.46 GAA and .905 save percentage earned Allen a spot on the NHL's all-rookie team. Allen is currently behind Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott on St. Louis' depth chart. There's a chance Allen could open next season with the Blues, but that seems unlikely barring injury or a trade.
