Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves in Florida's 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.
As the Panthers look for some help in net, they turned to their 23-year-old goalie of the future on Friday night for his first start of the season. Markstrom certainly has the makings to be a great NHL goaltender, but he has been thrust into a pretty poor situation with the Panthers, who are neither strong on defense nor clicking on offense right now.

Jacob Markstrom will probably play between the pipes on Friday.
Markstrom was the first netminder off the ice following the Panthers' practice, which is usually a good indicator of who will start. He was brought up in part because of the Florida Panthers' recent struggles.

The Panthers are hoping that their goalie of the future, Jacob Markstrom, can help the team get back on track in the present.
"We've got to start to put him into the system, see if he can play some games and get some experience," GM Dale Tallon said Wednesday. "Also, we have to stem the tide. I'm not happy. It's a critical part of the season and every game is important. We need to cut our goals-against down. He's played great down there. It's his third season as a pro and time to see what he can do. I'm not going to sit still and allow this to continue." In eight career appearances with Florida, Markstrom has a 2-5-1 record with a .920 save percentage and a 2.69 GAA. He is expected to start either Thursday or Friday, but coach Kevin Dineen hasn't decided which game to play him in yet.

Jacob Markstrom has been summoned from the minors by Florida and he's expected to start Thursday against Philadelphia.
The Panthers haven't won in their past five games and lead the NHL in goals allowed. Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmsensen have struggled so far this season, so the team has decided to shake up their crease in an attempt to end their losing ways.

The Florida Panthers are last in the NHL in goals-against per game at 3.83, but the team doesn't have any plans to bring up prospect Jacob Markstrom from the minors.
"We've got two goalies right now that are proven NHL guys" coach Kevin Dineen said. "They have not performed up to their expectations these last couple of games. For us to have success they've got to be better and we've got to be better as a team." Markstrom may get a chance to play at some point this year, but even if doesn't his wait to man the crease for Florida probably won't be much longer.

The Panthers will carry Jose Theodore and Scott Clemmensen as their goaltenders into the 2013 season. Florida also cut forwards Jon Rheault, Drew Shore and Quinton Howden, as well as defenseman Colby Robak by sending them to the AHL's San Antonio Rampage.

Jacob Markstrom had a forgettable night in net, allowing four goals in San Antonio's 4-1 loss to Toronto.
The netminder made just 12 saves. The Panthers have high expectations for their 22-year-old, but he's struggled in the AHL, posting just a 2.90 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.
