Jacob Markstrom blocked 33 shots in a 4-1 win over Carolina Tuesday night. The victory was his second of the year and it interrupted a four-game winless slide. Perhaps now he can build some confidence and start performing up to his potential after some troubling contests since he rejoined the big club from the minors.

Jacob Markstrom is expected to start in goal Tuesday night. Markstrom has just one win this season in seven appearances and was recently given a mental day off by coach Kevin Dineen. The Panthers still believe in Markstrom as their goalie of the future, but it's pretty clear he's got a long ways to go.

Coach Kevin Dineen decided to give Jacob Markstrom a mental day off Thursday night to refocus himself. Markstrom allowed the first shot of the game to beat him in three of his last four appearances. He also permitted at least one goal before the 2:35 mark of the first period in four straight losses. Scott Clemmensen got the nod for Florida instead and he didn't fair much better by surrendering the second shot he faced in the Panthers' 4-1 loss to Boston. Although he did settle down as the game progressed.

Jacob Markstrom will make his sixth straight start Wednesday when Florida plays in Boston. Coach Kevin Dineen is confident that Markstrom can turn it around despite a rocky start. "He's got a lot of staff around him to support him and help him in every way that we can, whether it's through video, through practice, or a kick in the tail," Dineen said. "Whatever we feel is going to be most effective for him; it gets back to the incredible opportunity that we get to grab the net in the NHL and take advantage of it." Markstrom has allowed the first shot to beat him for a score in three of his last four games, so if he can get over that hurdle it may give him some additional confidence. Jacob Markstrom allowed the first shot he faced to find the back of the net for the third time in his last four contests. "You don't learn from your saves, you learn from your mistakes," goaltending coach Robb Tallas said. "Of course, I don't want to see first shots of games going in, but at the same time that will make him so much stronger." In the long run it could make him a better goalie, but for now it's hurting his team and severely weakening any limited fantasy value he has. Markstrom owns a 1-5-1 record with an .891 save percentage and a 3.29 GAA this season. He would make his appearances much easier on himself if he settles into games quicker, which is thankfully something he can learn.

Jacob Markstrom wasn't busy in Tuesday's loss to Tampa Bay and he wasn't impressive either in a 3-2 loss. He surrendered three goals on only 13 shots for his fourth straight defeat (0-3-1). The Jacob Markstrom era hasn't gotten off to a very good start in Florida.

Jakob Markstrom was the first goalie off the ice at Tuesday's morning skate and will likely start in net tonight. Markstrom has struggled a fair amount since being called up to be the Panthers' starting goalie. His trouble often comes from a poor start, as was the case in Sunday's loss to Montreal. While Markstrom has a ton of potential, we've seen nothing to justify trusting him in most formats.

Panthers goalie Jacob Markstrom allowed five goals on 38 shots in a 5-2 loss to the Panthers Sunday. As has been his habit, Markstrom started off the game slowly, allowing a pair of first period goals. He settled down somewhat afterwards, but the damage had been done by that point. The Panthers young netminder has recorded just one victory in six starts.

It appears that Jacob Markstrom is having trouble at the very begining of games. He has let in a soft goal at the start of both his starts this week. Markstrom seems to be aware of the problem. "It's never how you want to start a hockey game,'' Markstrom said. It appears that notwithstanding Markstrom's jitters, Panther coach Kevin Dineen is in favour of giving the rookie netminder a chance to run with the Cats' starting job. "He's been given a real quality opportunity right now and I have a strong belief in him that he could be a premier player in the league, and the opportunity's knocking on the door,'' he said before Friday's game. Let's see how patient a man Dineen really is.

Jacob Markstrom turned aside 25 of 28 shots in a 3-2 overtime defeat on Friday. Markstrom got a chance to play just one day after being yanked just three minutes in Washington's 7-1 win over Florida. Obviously, he was far better on Friday - it would have been remarkable if he had found a way to be worse - but unfortunately he still has only won one of his first five starts this season. Markstrom has plenty of upside and we wouldn't even give up on him in single-season leagues. At the same time, the Panthers have struggled mightily this season and that's likely to continue to hurt him.
