Gabriel Landeskog has been selected as the NHL's rookie of the month. Landeskog had seven goals and 13 points in 12 February games. He's one point behind Adam Henrique, who has played in 10 fewer contests. The two of them will likely have to compete with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who has 38 points in 43 games, for the Calder Trophy. Landeskog is a step below both of them in terms of points per game, but he is the most well rounded of the three rookies.

Gabriel Landeskog participated in his first NHL fight Thursday when he took on the Blue Jackets' Jack Johnson. It did not end well for Landeskog who certainly did not win the fight (and we are being kind). But he did show up and ended up with seven minutes as he took a holding penalty in the first.

Gabriel Landeskog's point streak came to an end in the Colorado Avalanche's 2-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night. The rookie had put up points in six straight games, but that all ended in this one. Still, for those that own him, he did record four shots on goal and seven penalty minutes. The rookie has 18 goals, 40 points and plus-21 rating on the season, meaning this negative-one effort has been a rarity for the already-sound two-way forward. Regardless, for a team trying to make a playoff push, this isn't the kind of performance it wanted against the NHL's cellar-dweller.

With a little over a month left in the regular season, Gabriel Landeskog looks like one of the frontrunners for the Calder Trophy. Landeskog isn't likely to lead all rookies in points, and even if he does, the fact that Adam Henrique and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins both missed a significant amount of playing time this season will diminish that accomplishment. All the same, Landeskog is miles ahead of Henrique and Nugent-Hopkins in other categories like hits and he's the clear leader in takeaways with 48. Of the 2011-12 class of rookies, Landeskog looks like the most well rounded. The only question is if that will be enough to earn him the Calder Trophy.

Gabriel Landeskog scored a goal, but the Avalanche were beaten by Winnipeg by a score of 5-1. The goal was the 15th of the campaign for the talented rookie, who also directed nine shots on goal in the loss. Erik Johnson drew the only assist on the power-play marker.

Gabriel Landeskog notched his 14th of the season and added an assist, in Colorado's 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Landeskog has been steady all year long, and offers an incredible +/-, especially for a rookie. Matt Duchene and Peter Mueller were out due to injury, which opens up more opportunities for the rookie to flourish. He's a high end waiver pick right now because he's riding a hot streak where he has 10 points in 11 games. Keep him in your line-up until the team gets healthy and he cools off.

Gabriel Landeskog had nine shots on goal Saturday, which is a new franchise record for a rookie. Landeskog has a rookie-leading 161 shots in 54 games this season and he'll probably break the Avalanche's rookie record of 185 shots, set by Paul Stastny in 2006-07. Landeskog is also tied for second place among rookies with 141 hits.

Gabriel Landeskog credits his move to Canada and junior hockey for his offensive skills. Landeskog said that he was not a star in Sweden, but just an average player when he moved to Canada to play for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL when he was just 16. "Back home, right before I moved to Canada, I'd see myself as more of a role player, more of a physical force," Landeskog said. "I didn't have that much offense in my game. I was more of a penalty killer and that kind of stuff. And I was like, 'Either I stay in Sweden and continue to play this role, or should I go to North America and develop all the other aspects of the game, offensive game, defensive game, the power play and all that stuff.' When I look back at my two years in Kitchener, I got to develop and not only be that penalty-killing forward." It worked as Landeskog was drafted second overall this season and has managed to stick with the Avs, playing well enough to be playing in the rookie game during the All-Star weekend.

Gabriel Landeskog is riding a career-high three-game point streak. Landeskog has a goal and four points in that span. He isn't likely to win the Calder Trophy and he might not get a nomination in a rookie class that also features Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Henrique, Matt Read, Cody Hodgson, and Craig Smith. However, Landeskog is having a great rookie season. His 26 points is a step below some this season's best rookies, but he also leads the Avalanche with a plus-12 rating and 129 hits.
