Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog has won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.
The Swedish left winger beat out Edmonton's Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and New Jersey playoff hero Adam Henrique for the award at the NHL's annual awards show in Las Vegas Wednesday night. Landeskog had 22 goals and 30 assists for the Avalanche, who chose him with the second overall pick in last summer. The former Ontario Hockey League forward had little trouble adjusting to the NHL grind, playing in all 82 games for Colorado. Landeskog's father was a defenseman in the Swedish Elite League. He dedicated the award to his grandfather, who died in February.

Gabriel Landeskog has been nominated for the Calder Trophy.
Of the three nominees, Landeskog finished third in terms of point-per-games, but he still had a great 52 points in 82 games. However, the case for Landeskog is that he's the most complete player on the list. Landeskog is sound defensively and a physical presence. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins might be the flasher player, but don't be surprised if Landeskog wins the award. The third Calder nominee is Adam Henrique.

Lobbying for Gabriel Landeskog to win the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top first-year player out of Denver will be intense over the next two months.
The second pick overall in last season's entry draft registered 51 points, and on many nights, was Colorado's best player. Landeskog's main competition for the award is the Oilers' Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who matched Landeskog offensively in 20 less games. However, Landeskog may have a more complete game that could resonate with the voters.

Gabriel Landeskog's two assists in Colorado's 4-1 win gives the rookie 51 points on the season.
Landeskog was expected to be NHL ready, but he has surpassed expectations with a 50+ point season. On top of a nice scoring season, he has a +23! A ridiculously great number for a rookie. Keep rolling him out there with confidence.

Gabriel Landeskog notched a power-play goal, but the Colorado Avalanche fell in overtime 3-2 to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
And the tremendous rookie year continues. Even more impressive is that he hasn't faded one bit as the season's progressed. The 19-year-old has 22 goals, 48 points and an excellent plus-19 rating on the year. Jamie McGinn (20th) potted the other goal, also with the man advantage. Matt Duchene had a game-high seven shots on net, though he failed to score for the ninth straight game (and has just one point during that stretch).

Gabriel Landeskog scored his 20th goal and registered his 26th assist in Wednesday's game.
Landeskog now has six points in eight games this month. He definitely has a shot of finishing the season with more points than any other rookie, but he isn't likely to beat Adam Henrique or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in points per game.
