The Washington Examiner says free agent Fred Davis is the "odd man out" for the Redskins. The Examiner points to the team's 7-0 record after Davis' Achilles' injury, the offense's retooling with Pierre Garcon's addition, and Washington's salary cap situation as reasons why Davis doesn't fit anymore. The Redskins also aren't expected to use the franchise tag this season. Davis is Rotoworld's No. 2 free-agent tight end, but he might not draw interest early on as he continues his rehab.

A source tells the Washington Post that free agent Fred Davis (torn Achilles) is "ahead of schedule" in his recovery. The source here could be Davis' agent, who will be trying to drum up interest for his client ahead of free agency. The Redskins have already stated that they won't make a decision on Davis until later in the spring, presumably when they can get a better look at his progress. He ruptured his left Achilles' tendon on Oct. 21 and is no lock to be ready for Week 1 of next season.

The Washington Post expects the Redskins to pass on using the franchise tag. The 'Skins lack compelling candidates for the tag, and are mired in one of the league's worst salary-cap situations. It means they'll risk losing free agent Fred Davis on the open market, but he won't draw significant interest early in the process as he recovers from a torn Achilles' tendon. GM Bruce Allen says the Redskins will assess Davis' recovery "later this spring."

The Washington Times expects free agent Fred Davis to reach the open market. Redskins GM Bruce Allen hinted Thursday that Davis remains in the team's plans, but it doesn't appear a deal is imminent as Davis makes his way back from a torn Achilles' tendon. Even though he's coming off major injury, the Redskins would be running a real risk of losing Davis if they let him reach free agency. Washington is well over the cap, and even a rehabbing Davis would likely draw strong interest in a league with an increasing thirst for pass-catching tight ends.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen says the team won't be able to gauge the extent of free agent Fred Davis' (Achilles) recovery until later this spring. "Later this spring" would be well into the free agency period, so the Redskins may be planning to re-sign Davis. A high-risk signing, he may have to settle for an incentive-laden, multi-year contract. The Washington Examiner recently opined that Washington "needs" to re-sign Davis. He tore the tendon in Week 7, and could end up starting the season on PUP. Davis currently checks in as our No. 2 free-agent tight end.

A league insider tells the Washington Post that free agent TE Fred Davis could end up with an incentive-laden, multi-year deal. Coming off an Achilles' tendon tear, Davis is going to be a high-risk signing. Teams will be looking to protect themselves in case he's a shell of himself or aggravates the injury. The Post does note that John Carlson got a five-year, $25 million deal from the Vikings last offseason despite missing the entire 2011 campaign with a torn labrum. That would be a lot of coin for Davis, who could start next season on the PUP list.

The Washington Examiner believes the Redskins "need" to re-sign free agent TE Fred Davis. Although Davis' passing-game production had fallen off before his injury, he went from a liability as a blocker to competent. If Davis walks, the Redskins would be left with only the lead-footed Logan Paulsen and raw former WR Niles Paul at tight end. A seam-stretcher when healthy, keeping Davis will be a no-brainer if the price is right, but there's no guarantee it will be in a tight-end mad league. Davis would be due $6.54 million if franchise tagged for the second consecutive year. That's prohibitive for a player who could begin the year on the PUP list.

It would cost the Redskins $6.54 million to use the franchise tag on TE Fred Davis for a second straight year. The Washington Times believes Davis' progress in his rehab from Achilles surgery could determine whether or not he gets the tag. We believe it's a prohibitive number for a player coming off major surgery. Davis isn't likely to draw that much guaranteed money on the open market.

Redskins placed TE Fred Davis on injured reserve with a torn left Achilles' tendon, ending his season. He finishes the season with 24 catches for 325 yards and no touchdowns in seven appearances. Davis blocked more than expected in Washington's RG3- and Alfred Morris-centric offense, and his stats were well off the previous year's pace. When the "offseason" begins, the Redskins will probably try to re-sign Davis to a much cheaper deal than he would have commanded had he made it through his contract year healthy. He's headed for unrestricted free agency, and will be rehabbing for the majority of the next 6-8 months.

According to ProFootballTalk, Fred Davis is done for the season after tearing his left Achilles' tendon in Sunday's Week 7 game against the Giants. It's a brutal injury for Davis. He's in the final year of his contract and was in the midst of a solid year with 23 catches for 312 yards through the first six games. Now he'll be in a race just to get healthy for 2013 training camp. The Redskins' in-house replacements include converted wideout Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen. Chris Cooley is also available on the free agent market.
