Fred Davis has just two catches for 16 yards through three Redskins preseason starts.
They both came in Washington's third preseason game, with the starters playing over a half. Davis started, but was not targeted in the first two contests. The Redskins' offense could change in the regular season, but it's been perimeter-oriented featuring Pierre Garcon so far in August, and Niles Paul has played a bigger role than Davis thus far. Davis looks like a dicey TE1 fantasy pick.

According to the Washington Examiner, Fred Davis "continues having a quiet camp."
Per beat writer John Keim, Davis "hasn't been a favored target" of rookie QB Robert Griffin III throughout camp, with RGIII preferring Pierre Garcon. Keim believes Garcon has been RGIII's most targeted pass catcher by a "wide margin." RGIII spoke glowingly of Garcon on Monday. "Just his tenacity after he gets the ball," Griffin said. "He's confident going across the middle because he knows nobody can really punish him because of his body. ... He's got the total package." We still expect Davis to be a TE1 in fantasy leagues, but it's something to file away.

After ending last season on suspension, Fred Davis is being drug tested 2-3 times each week.
Davis' 2011 suspension was for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He's now taking regular urine tests and also speaks to a therapist each week. "I feel I know the decision I made is not something I'm going to do," Davis said. "I think you've got to talk to yourself about it at the end of the day." Davis will be angling for a contract extension later this season.

Fred Davis was "clearly" the most impressive skill player on the field when NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah visited Redskins camp this week.
Jeremiah, a scout with the Eagles last year, calls Davis "a true mismatch-type player," able to exploit linebackers and safeties as a security blanket and red-zone weapon for Robert Griffin III. "If he can stay healthy and out of trouble," writes Jeremiah, "Davis should make a strong push for Pro Bowl consideration in 2012."

Of Fred Davis' 59 receptions last year, 15 went for at least 20 yards.
A perfect fit in the Shanahan scheme as an athletic seam-stretching tight end, Davis finished behind only Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham in yards per game last season. Matt Williamson of ESPN's Scouts Inc. predicted Thursday that Davis will "explode" this year. Rotoworld ranks Davis No. 8 among fantasy tight ends, though it could be argued that his upside is higher than No. 7 Jason Witten.

Fred Davis will play out the season under his one-year franchise tag tender of $5.446 million.
The Redskins would have been foolish to do a long-term deal with Davis before Monday's deadline. After a failed drug test and subsequent four-game suspension last season, he's one more misstep away from a season-long ban. They are also well under the salary cap right now, so taking the cap hit won't hurt. Finally clear of Chris Cooley's shadow, Davis is entering his prime at age 26.

CBS' Jason La Canfora doesn't expect Redskins franchise player Fred Davis to sign a long-term deal before Monday's deadline unless he's amenable to a "decidedly team-friendly deal."
In other words, it's not going to happen. Rotoworld's No. 8 tight end, Davis will make $5.446 million under his one-year tender.

Recent ADP shows Fred Davis, Jacob Tamme, and Tony Gonzalez among the available tight ends in the eighth round of fantasy drafts this year.
Tight end is as deep as ever. Once Jimmy Graham and Rob Gronkowski are off the board, it's safe to wait quite a while before addressing the position. Davis has more competition for targets in Washington, but still figures to be a favorite of Robert Griffin III. The projection for our eighth-ranked tight end shows him averaging just one point per game less than third-ranked Aaron Hernandez.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk.com the Redskins have "reached out" to franchise player TE Fred Davis about signing a long-term deal.
Per the source, however, "nothing is imminent." The July 16 deadline to sign franchise players to long-term extensions is less than two weeks away. Coming off a four-game suspension for multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy, Davis would almost certainly be signing for below market value if he agreed to an extension this summer. The odds are high he plays under his one-year tender.

Redskins TE Fred Davis says the failed drug tests that triggered his four-game suspension last season are "something that's not going to come up again."
"The lockout made me a little bit more free, all that free time," Davis said Monday. "But still, I've learned. I know football's what's important now." Although the Redskins are working in a rookie quarterback and TE Chris Cooley says he's healthy, Davis is a lock for TE1 status. He could flirt with being a top-five option.
