Wei-Yin Chen blanked the Mariners for eight innings Thursday, combining with Darren O'Day on a five-hitter. Chen fired seven shutout innings against the Red Sox back on June 11. Since then, he'd allowed three earned runs or more in five of six starts, and didn't surrender less than two in any. That stretch saw his ERA spike from 3.76 to 4.21. It's back down to 3.96, a number he'll defend against the Angels next week.

If there's any good news for the Red Sox, it's that they somehow salvaged a game during a three-game series in which they were limited to one run in 27 innings. Chen struck out a season-high seven tonight. He's been a solid, reliable starter for the Orioles since arriving prior to 2012, but rarely has he been spectacular. This is the first time since May 12, 2013 that he's gone a start without allowing a run (and he pitched only five innings that game before suffering a strained oblique that sidelined him for nearly two months).

Wei-Yin Chen pitched well in a no-decision against the Athletics on Friday, surrendering just two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Chen struck out four and didn't issue a walk in the ballgame. The only scoring against him came on a pair of solo home runs off the bats of Josh Donaldson and Derek Norris. He left in line for his seventh victory of the season, but the Orioles bullpen was unable to hang on for him. Chen will bring a 4.13 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 50/11 K/BB ratio into Wednesday's start against the Red Sox.

The rough outing raised his ERA to 4.50 after being at 3.69 two starts ago. He's got a pretty good shot to get back on track Sunday at the Astros.

Chen was excellent, holding the Royals to seven hits and a walk while striking out only one batter. Danny Valencia brought a run in with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Orioles' lead to 2-1, but that would be it for scoring on the night. Chen, whose ERA is a respectable 3.69, will face the Pirates in Pittsburgh in his next outing.
