The news on Skaggs is about as good as anyone could have hoped for, as he's been cleared of any damage to his ulnar collateral ligament and it sounds like he still has a chance to pitch again this season. He will sit out for about a week before attempting to ramp things back up.

The Angels are expected to provide an official diagnosis in short order, but Skaggs (who already had Tommy John surgery once) can breathe a sigh of relief as his elbow ligaments were found to be intact. That said, it remains uncertain if he will be able to pitch again this season.

He threw six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits, walking four and striking out eight in his last start, so this was quite unexpected. Jhoulys Chacin will get the start in his stead. Skaggs will undergo an MRI Wednesday, and considering he had Tommy John surgery in August of 2014, this is awfully concerning. The Angels are out of contention and Skaggs is one of the organization's few prized assets, so even though they are really hurting for rotation depth, it would not be surprising if they shut Skaggs down, regardless of the results of the MRI.

Skaggs threw six shutout innings but took a no-decision in a loss against the Rangers on Friday. He allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked four.

The 25-year-old likes to live dangerously. He has walked at least four batters in two of his last four starts, but during that stretch, he has thrown six shutout frames in two different outings. Overall, he is 3-3 with a 4.13 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 48 innings this season.

He did allow two homers, but that didn't prevent him from improving to .500. The 25-year-old struck out seven for the second time this season. He is now 3-3 with a 4.71 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 42 frames.

Skaggs (2-3) allowed just two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings Sunday, striking out six, in a 5-0 win over the Tigers.

EDGE Analysis

If it weren't for Miguel Cabrera, who collected a single and a double off him, Skaggs would have had a no-hitter going. There's been no middle ground for the left-hander since he joined the Angels' rotation -- he's got a 0.00 ERA and 19:5 K:BB in 18.1 innings over three of his starts, but a 9.68 ERA and 16:11 K:BB in 17.2 innings in his other four outings. If you can stomach the volatility, Skaggs does have a favorable matchup in his next start Saturday in Seattle against a Mariners squad that ranks 22nd in the majors with a wOBA (.314) against lefties.

Skaggs (1-3) lasted just four innings, allowing four runs on four hits and season-high five walks while striking out two Blue Jays in Tuesday's loss.

Tuesday marked the left-hander's third loss in as many starts. After two scoreless outings to open his season in late July, Skaggs has struggled mightily since turning the corner into August. Over his four starts this month, the 25-year-old has a 9.68 ERA to go along with a 2.27 WHIP. He'll look to get back on track when he takes the hill Sunday in Detroit for his next start.

Skaggs (1-2) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks over just 3.1 innings in Wednesday's loss to Seattle. He struck out five.

EDGE Analysis

The lefty's now been smacked around for four runs twice by the Mariners, with a seven-run disaster in Cleveland sandwiched between. On paper, the 25-year-old Skaggs has it all -- talent, pedigree, minor league performance -- but he's never put it together in the majors on a consistent basis yet. The Tommy John surgery from which he recently returned certainly has something to do with that, of course. With nothing to play for, the Angels should give Skaggs plenty of opportunities to work through things down the stretch.

Skaggs logged back-to-back scoreless outings after his return from the disabled list, but was greeted rudely by the Mariners, as they ran his pitch count up to 97 before the end of the sixth inning. Skaggs still boasts a healthy 2.04 ERA over 17.2 innings, and will look for a better result when he faces the Indians on Friday.
