Paul Goldschmidt had an RBI double, a walk and a run scored in win over the Brewers on Friday. Goldschmidt scored the go-ahead run of the ballgame on a bases-loaded wild pitch from left-hander Michael Gonzalez in the seventh. The 25-year-old first baseman has hit safely in three out of the first four games this season, but he has also struck out seven times in 17 at-bats. Improvement against right-handed pitching will be the key to him taking a step forward this season.

Diamondbacks signed 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a five-year, $32 million contract extension with a club option for 2019. The deal was first reported by ESPN's Jim Bowden on Friday and is now official. Goldschmidt was already under team control through 2017, so the extension buys out his arbitration years and at least one year of free agency. The 25-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the top young first basemen in the National League and batted .286/.359/.490 with 20 home runs and 83 RBI in his first full season in the majors.

ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that the Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt have agreed to a contract extension. The terms of the deal are not yet known. Goldschmidt hadn't been slated for arbitration eligibility until after 2014 and had previously expressed hesitancy at hammering out a long-term deal, but the two sides made up ground recently. The new deal figures to buy out Goldy's arbitration years and probably some free agent years, as well.

Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI as the Diamondbacks fell to the Royals on Saturday. Goldschmidt, 25, is hitting .412 this spring after an impressive showing in 2012 in which he posted a .286/.359/.490 line. There's plenty of hype to go along with his upside so he won't be cheap on draft day, but there's a reason why.

The Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro is "sensing more optimism" about a Paul Goldschmidt extension now than he was earlier this month. The D'Backs and Goldschmidt's agent, Joe Sambito, have stopped and started talks about a long-term deal a few times this offseason. The first baseman expressed a hesitancy at first to iron out an extension, but it appears the two sides are closing the gap. Goldschmidt isn't arbitration-eligible until after 2014 and is under team control through 2017.

FOX Sports' Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Diamondbacks and Paul Goldschmidt are engaged in ongoing dialogue about a multi-year contract extension. The Diamondbacks approached Goldschmidt about an extension during the offseason, but he preferred to wait. However, he has apparently had a change of heart in recent weeks. The 25-year-old isn't arbitration-eligible until after 2014 and is under team control through 2017, but he has quickly established himself as one of the top young first basemen in the National League.

Paul Goldschmidt slugged a solo homer in Monday's win over the Dodgers. It was Goldschmidt's first home run of the spring, though he is batting .410 (11-for-26) in 17 games. The 25-year-old hit .286 with 20 homers, 82 RBI, 18 stolen bases and an .850 OPS in his first full season in the big leagues last year and still has plenty of room for growth.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers recently met with Paul Goldschmidt's agent, Joe Sambito, recently to discuss a possible extension for the first baseman. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says it would be a "surprise" if a deal wound up getting done anytime soon. Goldschmidt isn't arbitration-eligible until 2015 and prefers to wait another year before discussing an extension, while the club would like to lock him up now.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks would like to re-open extension talks with Paul Goldschmidt. The D'Backs approached Goldschmidt about the idea several weeks ago, but the first baseman told them he wanted to wait. Perhaps he'll reconsider if the club blows him away with an offer. Goldschmidt isn't arbitration-eligible until 2015.
