A right hamstring cramp resulted in an abbreviated outing for Tomlin last weekend, but there was never any indication that he was in serious danger of missing Friday's start. Tomlin tossed a four-hit complete game in his lone start against Detroit last season.

Team trainers came out to remove Tomlin while he was warming up prior to the sixth inning Saturday after his right hamstring tightened up. He had a very solid start overall before exiting the contest, holding the Mets to one run on four hits across five innings while fanning six batters. Given that he was dealing cramping rather than a strain, Tomlin may still be able to make his next scheduled start Friday in Detroit.

Chris Assenheimer of the Chronicle-Telegram is reporting that Tomlin may have tweaked something in his leg, but the team has yet to release an official injury designation for him. Regardless, Tomlin's day is done after five innings of one-run ball. Jeff Manship has entered the game as Tomlin's replacement.

Since he opened the season as the Tribe's fifth starter, Tomlin's first opportunity wasn't scheduled until Sunday against the White Sox, but with that game being postponed due to poor weather, the right-hander will have to wait even longer to toe the rubber. He's expected to throw a simulated game in the next couple of days to condition his arm in advance of the start against the Mets following his lengthy period of inactivity.

Tomlin will be the No. 5 starter to begin the season, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Tomlin was in a competition with Trevor Bauer for the final spot, and it appears that his strong finish to spring training has won him the role. That being said, Cleveland is expected to use their fifth starter sparingly to start the season, which could limit Tomlin's value. Due to this development, Trevor Bauer will move to the bullpen to start the season.

Tomlin tossed six shutout innings while striking out 10 batters Tuesday.

The Indians are expected to formalize their rotation plans to start the season Wednesday with Tomlin and Trevor Bauer fighting for the fifth spot with Cody Anderson having seemingly grabbed the fourth spot.

Cody Anderson has opened some eyes in the final weeks of spring and may have vaulted over Tomlin in the pecking order but Tomlin could still push Trevor Bauer into a relief role to start the season. Tomlin has the most relief experience of the trio but the Indians will likely utilize the first three weeks of the season to cement their rotation plans going forward as they look to sort out the two remaining spots from a trio of options.

Tomlin, who has struggled at times this spring in his effort to lock down the fifth starter spot, received a vote of confidence from manager Terry Francona, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Josh makes sense for a number of reasons," said Francona. "His first three outings here haven't been what he wanted. We saw how he pitched (last year). As long as he gets close to that, we feel he can really help us. He can do anything, but our preference is for him to start. Handling April can be challenge for pitchers and hitters. Just the way he carries himself, he does a pretty good job of handling himself no matter what is thrown at him."
