Tomlin had shoulder surgery in April, and didn't return to the Indians' rotation until mid-August, but he performed reasonably well over the final third of the year, and should be poised to claim a spot in their rotation for 2016 if he stays healthy.

Tomlin struggled while failing to factor into the decision on Saturday against the Royals, surrendering five earned runs and seven hits in 3.2 innings.

Tomlin had his worst outing of the season after a two-start stretch where he surrendered only two earned runs over 14.2 innings for a sterling 1.27 ERA. A glaring statistic in Saturday's performance was Tomlin's inability to miss bats, with the veteran right-hander inducing only three swings-and-misses over 53 pitches. He also failed to record a single strikeout after totaling five or more in each of his other eight starts in 2015. Given his stretch of solid efforts prior to Saturday's debacle, it's likely that Tomlin can rebound with a strong effort in his next trip to the mound, the final one of an injury-shortened campaign.

Tomlin (5-2) took a rare complete-game loss, yielding four hits and two earned runs in a 2-0 loss to the Royals on Tuesday. He struck out six.

It was the epitome of a tough-luck start for Tomlin, who was unable to receive any run support from an Indians offense that was shut down by multiple Royals pitchers. Tomlin actually notched his second complete game in three September appearances, and struck out six batters for the third consecutive start. The veteran right-hander had notched five consecutive victories prior to Tuesday, and had pitched extremely well overall since arthroscopic surgery on the AC joint in his right shoulder delayed his 2015 debut until Aug. 15. Tomlin's walk-free effort on Tuesday also marked the fourth time in his last fifth starts that he has not surrendered a free pass, a key factor in his outstanding 0.68 wHIP metric. Tomlin's next trip to the mound will likely be a home tilt against the White Sox on Sept. 19.

Tomlin (5-1) went 5.2 innings Wednesday, giving up three earned runs over five hits while walking none and striking out six in a 6-4 win over the White Sox.

EDGE Analysis

Tomlin has pitched well after spending most of 2015 recovering from shoulder surgery, having allowed three earned runs or less in five of his six starts. While Tomlin has impressed, fantasy owners should be wary of his susceptibility to the long ball; the 30-year-old has now given up 10 home runs in his six starts. Tomlin is next set to take the mound Monday against the Royals.

Tomlin was given a six-run lead before giving up his first run in the sixth inning on his way to an easy victory. He's now thrown three quality starts in his four starts this year, and he's also won his last three starts. He'll make his next start Saturday at Detroit.

Tomlin (shoulder) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in his second rehab start at Double-A Akron on Friday. Tomlin's got several more rehab starts in front of him before being activated off the DL and a rotation spot in Cleveland seems remote upon a return to full health.
