Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday that Joey Votto (quad) is making "good, positive" progress, but there remains no timetable for his return. Votto had been hoping to be activated on Saturday when first eligible, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen. Price admitted last week that it's possible the first baseman won't be able to get back to 100 percent health this season.

Reds manager Bryan Price admitted on Friday that it "may not be possible this year" to get Joey Votto (quad) back to 100 percent. Votto is officially on the disabled list with a distal left quadriceps strain, but the Reds are concerned about the strength of his left knee, which he had operated on twice in 2012. The first baseman remains hopeful of returning on May 31 when first eligible, but it sounds like he'll be playing compromised this season. "The soreness - I can't say it's completely gone - but it's much more controlled," Price said. "But the strength deficit is still a concern. To me, it made more sense to get Joey as close to 100 percent - that may not be possible this year - but as close to it as we can and give him a better foundation on which to play as opposed to getting him back at 50 percent because we didn't give him an extra week to 10 days to get that stability back in in his leg."

Joey Votto (quadriceps) expects to be activated from the 15-day disabled list when first eligible. Votto was placed on the DL retroactive to May 16, so he can return next Saturday (May 31). He told reporters this weekend that he has already made considerable progress from his distal left quadriceps strain.

Reds placed 1B Joey Votto on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 16, with a distal left quadriceps strain. The Reds had expressed optimism just a day ago that Votto would return to action later this week, but the club has decided it would be best to give him more time. Assuming he didn't suffer a setback, Votto seems likely to be ready for activation in early July. Brayan Pena is starting at first base Wednesday.

Joey Votto (quad) is aiming to return to the Reds' starting lineup this weekend versus the Cardinals. Votto will remain sidelined through the final two games of the Reds' three-game set in Washington, D.C. But the good news is that he is going to avoid a 15-day disabled list stint. Votto has been out since late last week because of a distal left quadriceps strain.

Reds manager Bryan Price said Monday that the club has not yet made a decision whether Joey Votto (quad/knee) will require a stint on the disabled list. Votto has remained in Cincinnati to receive treatment while his teammates continued their road trip in Washington D.C. The first baseman has missed four straight games due to a distal quadriceps strain in his left knee. At this point, it's unclear whether the Reds are leaning towards a DL stint or if they think Votto will be available to play soon.

Joey Votto hit his fourth career walkoff homer Friday to give the Reds a 4-3 win over the Rockies. Votto, newly installed as the Reds' cleanup hitter, hit the solo shot leading off the bottom of the ninth. It was his fifth homer of the year, so he's right on pace to match last year's 24 homers. It's the run (18) and RBI (11) totals that have suffered with the downturn from the Reds offense.

Joey Votto is hitting cleanup for the Reds Friday. Votto had been batting second instead of his customary third spot, but he's moving down with Jay Bruce (knee) out. You would normally think hitting fourth would result in more RBI opportunities, but Votto has Skip Schumaker, Brayan Pena and Brandon Phillips ahead of him in the batting order.
