Jake Peavy bounced back from a rough start his last time out in Sunday's 6-0 win over the Cubs, allowing just three hits across 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Peavy struck out seven and walked two in improving to 5-1. Peavy has now been quality in eight of his first nine 2012 starts, and has a 2.39 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 55/11 K/BB ratio to show for it. He'll get the Indians at home next Saturday.

Jake Peavy was tagged for six runs in 5 1/3 innings by the Tigers on Tuesday. Some very good starters figured to have bad days against that Detroit lineup this season, even if it has been a disappointment so far. Peavy hadn't allowed more than three runs in any of his seven starts this season before getting roughed up today.

Jake Peavy pitched a three-hitter Monday in a 4-0 win over the Athletics. Believe it or not, Peavy now has as many shutouts with the White Sox (three) as he did with the Padres. He's allowed three, two, one and now zero runs in his four starts this season. It's a trend that will be tough to continue, but he qualifies as one of 2012's biggest surprises thus far.

Jake Peavy yielded two runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out eight Friday in a win over Detroit. Peavy didn't impress this spring, but he's posted a 3.55 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP against two top offenses (the Rangers and Tigers) to start the regular season. With Baltimore and Oakland due up next, he makes for at least an interesting short-term play in mixed leagues.

Jake Peavy allowed three earned runs in six innings Saturday in his 2012 debut against the Rangers. Peavy yielded eight hits, but he operated well in damage control and wound up tallying five strikeouts against just one walk. The 31-year-old right-hander is no sure bet to stay healthy, but he should have value in mixed fantasy leagues while he's active. He'll face the dangerous Tigers next time out.

Jake Peavy looked very shaky in his final spring start, giving up four runs on seven hits in only four innings Sunday against the Reds. Peavy acknowledged difficulty locating his fastball, but was pleased with his breaking ball. Moreover, he is happy to finish spring training healthy. "This was a blessed spring," he said. "We haven't talked about my arm at all." After one brilliant start and three rather ugly ones, Peavy appears healthy, yet remains a big question mark over how successful he can be in 2012.

Jake Peavy hurled five hitless innings Saturday in a Cactus League game against the Mariners. Peavy allowed just one walk and struck out five Seattle hitters in what was by far his best outing of the spring. The oft-injured right-hander has an ugly 8.68 ERA so far in Cactus League play, but health is what matters most and he looked awfully sharp on Saturday.

Jake Peavy got lit up for the second consecutive outing on Monday, allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks in just 2 1/3 innings against the A's. Peavy allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base, and things went downhill from there. Now the owner of an absurd 18.69 ERA through his first 4 1/3 Cactus League innings of work, Peavy isn't exactly instilling confidence in potential owners after he limped to a 4.92 ERA in 111 1/2 innings last season. Think long and hard before using anything other than a late-round pick on Peavy in 10-to-12 team mixed leagues.

Jake Peavy struggled against the Brewers Wednesday, giving up three runs on four hits over two innings of work. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch while striking out a pair. Peavy posted a 4.92 ERA in 19 outings -- 18 starts -- last season and is never going to be the same following shoulder surgery. He does still make for a worthwhile late-round gamble, though, as he has a shot to help out if he can remain healthy.

Jake Peavy's surgeons informed him that his shoulder is as strong as its ever going to be. That's not a positive thing, but at least it's honest. "I can tell you that I'm 19 months out of major surgery that nobody else has had, that nobody else has come back from," Peavy said. "So there's no gameplan. There's no, 'Hey look at this guy, and this is what he did after "x" months. The surgeons have just said once you're 18 months, a year and a half out of surgery, you're not going to get any better. About what you have is what you have." The 30-year-old right-hander said last week that he's hoping to make 30 starts this season, something he hasn't done since 2007. Peavy had a 4.92 ERA in 111 2/3 innings last season and should be nothing more than a late-round flier in mixed league if you care to gamble.
