Clayton Richard requested $3.1 million and was offered $2.35 million by the Padres when arbitration figures were exchanged Tuesday.
Richard is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The 28-year-old left-hander posted a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings in 2011 before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in July, but he's expected to be 100 percent for spring training. The two sides have some ground to make up in order to prevent a hearing next month.

Clayton Richard (shoulder) began a throwing program last week.
Richard underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder in July after posting a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old left-hander is fully expected to be back to 100 percent health by the start of spring training.

Clayton Richard underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Friday.
Richard hasn't pitched since July 4 due to a strained left shoulder. He was playing catch as recently as a few days ago, but was apparently making little progress. The 27-year-old left-hander finishes his season with a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings.

Padres manager Bud Black said Tuesday that Clayton Richard (shoulder) is "not anywhere near close to talking about" returning.
Richard has been sidelined since early July with a left shoulder strain. He played catch Tuesday for the third time in five days, but has yet to throw from a mound. There's no current timetable for his return. The 27-year-old southpaw had a 3.88 ERA and 53/38 K/BB ratio over 99 2/3 innings prior to the injury.

There's currently no timetable for when Clayton Richard (shoulder) will begin throwing again.
As far as we know, Richard has not gone for an MRI, so the Padres are obviously not worried that he has structural damage in the shoulder. But, they're still going to tread cautiously with the left-hander. He figures to miss the rest of July, at the very least.

Padres placed LHP Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Richard thought he'd be fine moving forward despite having to leave Monday's start, but obviously that's not the case. It's not clear at this point how long he might be out or who will replace him in the rotation. Anthony Bass and Wade LeBlanc are obvious candidates.

Padres manager Bud Black said that he pulled Clayton Richard from Monday's start against the Giants after five innings because his arm was "a little stiff, a little tight."
That explains it. Richard tossed five shutout frames before being pulled from the game, but said he should be fine moving forward.

Clayton Richard shut out the Giants for five innings in a victory Monday.
Even though Richard doubled off Tim Lincecum in his second at-bat, manager Bud Black opted to remove him for a pinch-hitter with a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth. It looked like a mistake initially, as the Padres failed to add to their lead and then the bullpen gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Padres, though, were able to maintain their lead and win 5-3. Richard is 5-9 with a 3.88 ERA.

Clayton Richard limited the Red Sox to one run over five innings to earn a win in a rain-shortened game Wednesday.
The game was delayed four times before finally being called with the Padres up 5-1 in the eighth. Richard allowed eight hits and walked two in his five innings, but he managed to escape from jams by getting a bases-loaded double-play ball in the first and by picking Mike Cameron off first in the fifth. He remains a pretty shaky play at the moment.
