Avila (head) is not in the lineup Monday against the Twins, MLive Media Group reports.
Avila took a ball off the mask Sunday against Kansas City and departed the game due to lightheadedness. As expected, he'll take a seat Monday, most likely as a precaution more than anything else. Bryan Holaday will get the start behind the plate and bat seventh against Minnesota starter Anthony Swarzak.

Avila (head) left Sunday's game against the Royals due to lightheadedness, the Oakland Press reports. "He took one off the mask earlier in the day, but at the time, he didn't show the reaction that's normally associated with someone that's been concussed. He kind of went about his business," said manager Brad Ausmus. Avila will likely miss Monday's contest against the Twins.
Avila was removed after his seventh inning at-bat and was diagnosed with lightheadedness. He took a pitch off the mask earlier in the game and was reportedly experiencing headaches in the dugout. Avila has dealt with concussion issues each of the last three seasons, so the Tigers likely wanted to err on the side of caution. As such, it is unlikely Avila suits up Monday in Minnesota.

Avila (head) is back in the lineup Sunday against the Giants.
Avila hadn't played in a game since Tuesday because of lingering side effects of taking a foul ball off his facemask. He did pinch hit Saturday and apparently felt fine after the game, and his back behind the plate for the Tigers Sunday.

Avila (head) said Saturday that he felt fine and that he had a symptom-free day Friday, Matthew B. Mowery of the Oakland Press reports.
Despite his progress, the Tigers have decided to play it safe and hold Avila out again Saturday, but it sounds like the 27-year-old stands a fairly good chance of returning for Sunday's finale against San Francisco. James McCann will catch starter David Price on Saturday.

Avila (head) remains out of the lineup Saturday against the Orioles.
James McCann will step in behind the plate for his first career start, with Avila set to miss his fourth in a row after taking a foul ball off his facemask Tuesday night. Manager Brad Ausmus mentioned some "lingering side effects" Friday, but the team still has not classified Avila's injury as a concussion, so a return for Sunday's finale seems entirely possible. Look for Bryan Holaday to catch starter Kyle Lobstein in that game if Avila is not cleared.

Avila (head) is out of the lineup again Friday.
Avila's set to miss a third straight start after taking a foul ball off his facemask during Tuesday's game. Manager Brad Ausmus was vague when discussing the situation, but he did allude to some "lingering side effects," according to MLive.com. Ausmus went say Avila is just day-to-day and there has been no mention of a concussion, but the team will likely wait until Avila has completely shaken the cobwebs before returning him to action. James McCann will serve as the backup to Bryan Holaday in the interim.

Avila (head) remains out of the lineup Thursday against the Indians.
Since the Tigers have not classified Avila's injury as a concussion, it would seem they are just being cautious with the 27-year-old, which is certainly understandable given his history of concussion issues. Bryan Holaday will once again man the backstop in his stead Thursday. While Avila said he felt fine after taking a foul ball off his face mask during Tuesday's game, he did admit to experiencing some dizziness prior to exiting.

Avila (head) is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Indians.
The decision comes as no surprise after Avila took a foul tip to the mask Tuesday, forcing him out of the game prematurely. He'll remain under evaluation by the Tigers medical staff for a possible concussion.

Avila was removed from Tuesday's game against the Indians after taking a foul ball off his mask in the sixth inning, MLive.com's Chris Iott reports. The catcher said after the game that he felt fine, but manager Brad Ausmus acknowledged that Avila is not likely to play Wednesday.
Given Avila's history with concussions, it makes sense for the Tigers to take every precaution with him. Since Avila initially experienced some dizziness prior to exiting the game, he'll be closely evaluated over the next couple of days to determine if he's suffering from any symptoms that might foretell a longer absence. Bryan Holaday will serve as the team's catcher until Avila is deemed fit to return.
