Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez is expected to be activated from the disabled list Saturday after recovering from a back injury, according to Sportsnet. Sanchez, who has been rehabbing at Triple-A Buffalo, said he feels good and is anxious to return to the bullpen to help the team down the stretch. “Everything feels good,” Sanchez told the Buffalo News after a rehab outing Thursday. “Obviously I had tremendous life on the ball today. … I have a tendency to kinda ramp up a bit and stuff was moving everywhere. I think what we’re getting out of this is making sure that I feel good, regardless of how I do. Yeah you want to see results but at the end of the day it’s how I’m feeling. I’m here on rehab, I’m not here to make every pitch a strike. That’s what I want to do but sometimes it doesn’t work like that.”

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Aaron Sanchez will join the bullpen rather than the starting rotation upon his return to the major leagues from a back injury, according to the National Post. Sanchez was excellent as a late-inning reliever for the Blue Jays last season, posting a 1.09 ERA and 0.70 WHIP over 33 innings, but has struggled with his control as a starter this year. He owns a 3.55 ERA over 11 starts, but has almost as many walks (37) as strikeouts (42). The 22-year-old right-hander is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo and is expected to return this week.

Sanchez (lat strain) threw two innings and gave up a couple runs Tuesday in the Florida Gulf Coast League in a rehab outing as he works to build back up to a starter's workload, the Associated Press reports. He will need at least a few more rehab appearances before the Blue Jays can consider re-inserting him into the big league rotation. The Jays understandably don't want to pull the plug on developing Sanchez as a starter, but in related news, his latest fill-in, Felix Doubront, pitched a gem Tuesday in a win over the White Sox. After the All-Star break Toronto will be nearer to having to make a decision about what to do with Sanchez and which starter will get the boot if they opt to go that route.

Sanchez (back) threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since straining a lat muscle in mid-June, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports. Sanchez threw for the first time last Monday, and reported being pain free. He has now progressed to the point of throwing off a mound, and should continue to advance his rehab assuming he doesn't suffer a setback. However, his role with the Blue Jays may return, as he may be moved to the bullpen. The initial plan involved Sanchez potentially closing out games, but that was derailed following a season-ending injury to Marcus Stroman. Marco Estrada and Matt Boyd could be slated to round out the rotation, while Sanchez may challenge for a closer role that's been a struggle for the club thus far.

Sanchez (back) might return to the bullpen when he is healthy, the Associated Press reports. This makes plenty of sense, as Sanchez was much better as a reliever last season than he was as a starter this year, and Marco Estrada, who has been surprisingly solid as a starter, and pop-up prospect Matt Boyd may profile better in the rotation. The Jays have Roberto Osuna and Steve Delabar handling things at the back of the bullpen currently, but it would not be surprising if Sanchez found his way back to the closer role he occupied at the end of last season.

Sanchez (back) threw for the first time in two weeks on Monday and was pain free, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet reports. Sanchez threw 25 times from 60 feet and this marks the first step on his road to recovery. While he's feeling better, he's still not at 100 percent and is unlikely to return in June.

Sanchez (back) is yet to resume throwing, but manager John Gibbons said the right-hander is feeling better, Shi Davidi of SportsNet reports. Gibbons said earlier in the week that he does not expect Sanchez to make his next scheduled start Sunday, and the manager confirmed that Scott Copeland will get the call in Sanchez's place. Sanchez is without a firm return timetable, but the expectation is that he won't require much more time on the DL beyond the minimum 15 days.
