Steve Mason made only 21 saves in Columbus' 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks on Saturday night.
The 24-year-old isn't doing too much to threaten Sergei Bobrovsky's hold on the number-one job in net. He has a 4.07 goals-against average and .879 save percentage on the season.

Steve Mason isn't getting blamed for Columbus' 5-1 loss.
Mason made 37 saves in the defeat. Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards said that his teammates left him out to dry while R.J. Umberger suggested that even Patrick Roy wouldn't have been able to save Columbus on Wednesday. When it comes to Columbus it's almost a moot point because they are likely to get outclassed a lot this season. If you own either of their goaltenders, you will probably end up having to endure more than your fair share of games like this.

It was a familiar scene for the Columbus Blue Jackets as Steve Mason was lit up in a 5-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday.
Sergei Bobrovsky was already making a case for the No. 1 job with solid early work, yet the best argument could be made by merely watching Mason surrender five goals. The struggling former rookie of the year's starting status isn't just in question; his NHL-worthiness is in serious doubt as he flounders time and time again.

Steve Mason should be considered Columbus' probable starter for Wednesday's contest against Phoenix.
He was first off the ice at the team's morning skate, while Sergei Bobrovsky remained behind to work on some things with goaltender coach Ian Clark. Mason has watched Bobrovsky play the first two games of the year from the bench, but it looks like he will get his turn in the Blue Jackets' crease.

Steve Mason will start in Wednesday's game against Phoenix.
Sergei Bobrovsky started in the Blue Jackets' first two contests and did a great job. Mason should get plenty of work this season, but he faces an uphill battle if he still wants to be regarded as the Blue Jackets' starting goaltender. Given how many times Mason has burned fantasy owners over the last few years, we can't recommend owning him.

The Blue Jackets will need to add three goalies this offseason.
After Curtis Sanford left for the KHL, the team now has only Steve Mason and Allen York under contract for next season. General manager Scott Howson wants five keepers signed throughout the organization. There's no way Howson thinks that Mason is anymore than a No. 2 and even after York's late-season success, he's still just 22 and needs more AHL seasoning. Thus, Columbus will need to find a No. 1 and two depth guys. The Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline throws out Nashville' Anders Lindback and Philadelphia's Sergei Bobrovsky as potential trade targets. Free agents Columbus could be interested in include Jonas Gustavsson, Josh Harding, Scott Clemmensen and Martin Biron.

The Columbus Blue Jackets wouldn't get into specifics, but it appears likely that Steve Mason's situation will change in some way or another.
Columbus beat writer Aaron Portzline discussed all kinds of possibilities: waivers, a trade, a buyout or even Mason becoming a backup. Here's what GM Scott Howson said: "We need better play from that position. I told Steve in our exit interviews (earlier this month) that we're going to have a different look at that position next year, but that right now, nobody can predict what form that's going to take."

Steve Mason turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced in a 7-3 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
Steve Mason is not making life easy for the Columbus Blue Jackets' front office. At times it seems as though Mason is not fully prepared for the NHL, however at times like tonight, he can shine. If Mason is looking to return to Columbus as a starting goalie, his is definitely going to have to earn it.

Steve Mason will start in the Blue Jackets' season finale on Saturday.
Regardless of what happens on Saturday, this will be yet another disappointing season for Mason. He has a terrible 3.39 GAA and .894 save percentage in 45 games this season.

Steve Mason was sturdy in net, making 35 saves in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 5-2 win Thursday night over the Colorado Avalanche.
Oddly enough, the last week or so of the season, the lowly Blue Jackets have received solid goaltending, and consequently have four wins in their last five games. Allen York had started the previous four. Mason has had a very underwhelming season with a 15-26-3 record, 3.39-goals-against average and .894 save percentage, his third straight with a GAA above three.
