Coach Bruce Boudreau seemed a bit surprised that the Dallas Stars did not use Sheldon Souray on the power play very much last season.
The Stars used Trevor Daley more than they used the offensively talented Souray as the Stars power play in 2011-12 was the worst in the NHL. The Ducks were 3-3 on the power play, taking only 1:23 minutes of time to scored the three, with Souray quarterbacking the top unit. It looks like he still has it, even at the age of 36.

At least for one game, Sheldon Souray proved he can still be an effective offensive defenseman.
Souray scored on the power play and did a fairly good job as the Ducks' quarterback on the first unit. It remains to be seen if Souray will get consistent time on the first power play. Cam Fowler, who is slated to get a good chunk of the playing time with the man advantage, missed the game due to the flu. That said, we like Souray's chances of having a bounce back season.

Sheldon Souray is looking forward to starting the season as a member of the Anaheim Ducks.
Souray signed with the Ducks in July as a UFA and is expected to be a veteran presence on the blueline as Anaheim dealt Lubomir Visnovsky in the off-season to the Islanders."Honestly, I'm just happy and excited," Souray said of the tentative deal between the NHL and the Unon. "Really, that's the only way to put it. It's been stressful situation. It was a situation players have really had no control over and it was going to happen when the time was right. So you try and not to worry about things. It's a cliche to say but you really try to not worry about it. But the fact is this is what we do. This is what we've done every year since when we were kids." Look for Souray to be part of the first power play alongside Cam Fowler and have a big year in Southern California.

Veteran defenseman Sheldon Souray, who signed with the Ducks in July but has yet to make his Anaheim debut because of the NHL lockout, says the league's owners have no respect for him and his fellow players.
"We want to get a deal done," Souray says. "We want a fair deal. We want to have a partner that respects us. As of now, they don't. It's been their way or the highway. It's been take this or leave it. Frankly, it hasn't been good enough.. . .I never thought losing the season would even be a possibility if you would have asked me two weeks ago or even a month ago. I just never thought that scrapping a season was realistic at all. Today, and probably within the last two weeks, it's a lot more realistic than it ever has been."

Sheldon Souray is excited to be playing hockey near his family in Southern California and he feels it will give him a lift when he gets to make his Ducks debut.
"I feel like I have a lot left in the tank," said the 36-year-old veteran. "I've always played my best hockey when I've been around my family. To be able to combine those two things ... I really and truly feel that I have my best years ahead." Souray has battled injuries the past three years, so getting some extra time off because of the lockout could help him in the long run. He can play with an edge and he's expected to log some power-play time in Anaheim as well, so he could make for a solid later-round addition to your fantasy lineups.

Sheldon Souray is poised to play a vital role from the point on the Ducks' power play this season.
Souray began last season on a tear, notching 13 points in his first 14 games. However, his production slowed down significantly after that, as he recorded only seven more points in the final 50 games. A change of scenery and a chance to run the power play along with skilled youngster Cam Fowler as well as gifted forwards Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne should help him rekindle some of the offensive flare he showed earlier in his career. Souray should be flagged as a late-round fantasy sleeper.

Sheldon Souray continues to draw from his early days as a player.
The Ducks signed the 36-year-old to a risky three-year deal after a decent 21-point bounce-back campaign not only for his booming point shot, but because he's an experienced voice in the locker room. "When I got to Montreal I just did everything that was asked of me," Souray said. "Having fun, not knowing any better. You learn you're getting those opportunities because you're a hockey player. You'd better take care of business. ... But I'm thankful I grew up in the New Jersey organization. You had Scott Niedermayer, Scott Stevens, Slava Fetisov...It was like going to Harvard for a defenseman, before you go to high school. You learn what's required to be a good teammate. It wasn't a country club."

The Anaheim Ducks handed Sheldon Souray a three-year, $11 million contract.
Souray could really light things up on the Ducks' power play thanks to his terrifying slap shot, but the deal comes with some risks. For one thing, he'll turn 36 in July, making his three-year pact a 35+ contract. That's especially worrisome since he's injury-prone and is just a summer removed from coming back from an Edmonton Oilers-driven AHL exodus. There's some major red flags here, but the Ducks are making big defensive investments. In the next three years, they'll commit $21.5 million to Souray and Bryan Allen.

Sheldon Souray is one of five Dallas Stars who will test the free agent market on Sunday.
Adam Burish, Radek Dvorak, Jacob Dowell and Toby Petersen will also look at other offers but GM Joe Nieuwendyk stated that one or more of the players could return to the Stars. Souray is looking for a two-year deal and decided to become a UFA after Dallas reportedly offered him a one-year/$3 million deal.

Sheldon Souray has reportedly turned down a one-year contract offer from the Dallas Stars.
It's believed that the Stars were offering Souray about $3 million. If the report is true, then Souray might regret it later. Souray had a respectable six goals and 21 points in 64 games last season. However, he's got a long injury history and he'll turn 36 in July. Even in a thin market, he's not likely to get another offer worth more than $3 million annually, although there might be a team out there open to giving him a two-year deal if he's willing to be flexible in terms of pay.
