Marc Staal (eye) skated on his own Tuesday but says his peripheral vision is not yet 100 percent. Staal was medically cleared to begin skating Tuesday, which is a huge step in his recovery. He hasn't played since he took a deflected shot just above his eye on March 5. Staal said he could play without his vision being 100 percent but reiterated there's no timeline for him to begin practicing or for his return to game action. It's possible Staal could return before the end of the regular season, but that seems optimistic at this point. Keep him sidelined for now.

Kypreos says that the Rangers defenseman could be back on the ice within a week to 10 days, rejoining the lineup shortly after. Staal hasn't played since March 5 when he took a deflected shot just above his eye. He has been doing off-ice workouts in recent days.

Marc Staal (eye) has been making progress and is hopeful that he'll play again this season. Staal was hit near his right eye by a puck on March 5. The swelling has gone down, but he still has some facial fractures and his vision hasn't returned to 100%. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that he'll ever regain his full vision, although his doctors are hopeful.

The New York Rangers issued an optimistic statement regarding the status of injured defenseman Marc Staal Wednesday, but he is out indefinitely after being hit near his right eye by a puck. "Following an injury suffered in [Tuesday] night's game vs. Philadelphia, Marc Staal was examined today in New York by Dr. Mark Fromer, ophthalmologist, and Dr. Mendel Markowitz, maxillofacial surgeon," read the statement. "The injury has improved significantly and both doctors are optimistic that Marc will make a full recovery. Staal will be sidelined indefinitely." Eric Staal told NHL.com that Marc appeared to be "OK spirits," but the extent of the damage won't be known until the swelling goes down.

According to his brother Eric Staal, Marc is waiting for the swelling to go down in the area around his right eye before the extent of his injury can be assessed. "It's hard to say now. They're just waiting for the swelling to go down," Eric Staal told NHL.com. "He sounded like he was in OK spirits but we don't know a lot right now. Obviously we're saying prayers and hoping he dodged a bullet as far as being struck in that area. We'll know more with some more time." Marc Staal was hit around his right eye by deflected slap shot Tuesday night.

Marc Staal was hit near his right eye by the puck Tuesday night. Coach John Tortorella said there was no update on Staal's condition following the game. The Rangers don't practice Wednesday, so there may not be any word on his condition until after Thursday morning's skate.

Marc Staal has been playing very well recently and is getting plenty of ice time. Ranger coach John Tortorella believes that Staal is playing his best hockey since returning from a concussion last season and he has had a positive influence on developing rearguard Ryan McDonagh. But I think Marc Staal has played really well. I think he gets overlooked because we kind of rave about Mac [McDonagh]- the way he's come onto the scene. But Marc, since he's been back from his injury, has gotten better and better." If Staal is available in your league you may want to pick him up as a sixth defenseman.
