Following Saturday's trade of Eddie Lack to the Hurricanes, Markstrom appears in line to serve as the understudy to Ryan Miller during the upcoming season, Sportsnet.ca's Chris Johnston reports.
The Canucks were widely expected to deal one of Lack or Markstrom this summer, and it looks like they've opted to keep the more youthful, albeit less experienced of the two netminders. Once a prized goaltending prospect in the Panthers organization, Markstrom's luster has dimmed the last two years, but he showed in the AHL during the past season that he still possesses plenty of potential. In addition to submitting a 1.88 GAA and .934 save percentage for Utica during the regular season, Markstrom led the AHL squad to the Calder Cup Finals, showing that he's probably ready for a new test. While Markstrom's previous trials in the NHL haven't gone well, the Canucks appear confident the 25-year-old has matured enough during his time in the minors to emerge as a serviceable backup option. He's unlikely to see much time behind Ryan Miller in 2015-16, but if he fares well in the opportunities he does receive, Markstrom could be viewed as the Canucks' long-term successor in net.

Markstrom was reassigned to AHL Utica on Thursday, Irfaan Gaffar of Sportsnet reports.
With Ryan Miller (knee) healthy enough to back up Eddie Lack for Thursday's game against the Coyotes following a six-week absence, Markstrom will head back to the minors to see more frequent duty. Markstrom didn't receive much use during his stay with the big club, posting a 1-1-0 record, 3.08 GAA, and .879 save percentage over his three appearances.

Markstrom stopped 26 of 27 shots in Sunday's win over the Coyotes.
A great performance from Markstrom, who was making his first start since early-March. With Ryan Miller (knee) sidelined, Markstrom has taken on the backup role behind Eddie Lack. While the 25-year-old likely won't see much more action this season, he's been dominating in the AHL and could be one to keep an eye on in the coming years.

Markstrom is slated to start Sunday's road game against the Coyotes.
Recalled by the Canucks in late February in the wake of Ryan Miller's long-term knee injury, Markstrom made just his second appearance in a little less than a month Thursday against the Blue Jackets, stopping both shots he faced while relieving a struggling Eddie Lack in the team's 5-2 loss. The outing was one of Lack's worst efforts of the season, but it won't do much to loosen his grip on the regular starting gig, as he's been mostly dependable since filling in for Miller. As a result, expect Markstrom's workload to remain minimal the rest of the way, as Sunday's starting appointment looks to be only a measure to get Lack some rest during the Canucks' weekend back-to-back set. While Markstrom's season-long value is thus limited, the 25-year-old should at least make for an appealing streaming option, given that the Coyotes currently sit 29th in the league in goals per game.

Markstrom was reassigned to AHL Utica on Friday.
Coach Willie Desjardins said the Canucks made the transaction to provide Markstrom with an opportunity to "get a few games in." The Canucks have been riding Eddie Lack heavily while Ryan Miller remains on injured reserve, leaving little chance for Markstrom to pick up ice time and keep sharp. Markstrom will likely rejoin the Canucks at some point next week, but until then, Joacim Eriksson will serve as the team's backup goalie.

Markstrom gave up three goals on the first four shots he faced and was pulled less than eight minutes into Tuesday's loss to the Sharks.
Yikes, that's about as ugly a season debut as you can have. The only way this could have been worse is if he hadn't made a save at all. Once considered one of the league's top goaltending prospects, Markstrom has struggled mightily at the NHL level, but has stud-caliber numbers in the AHL. Maybe it's a mental thing.

Markstrom will be between the pipes for Tuesday's game against the Sharks, Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun reports.
Coach Willie Desjardins suggested that Markstrom was on tap for his season debut with the Canucks in the near future, and it appears that will come Tuesday, as Eddie Lack gets a rare night off. A former top goalie prospect during his days in the Panthers organization, Markstrom saw his stock fall after rough showings in the AHL over the last two seasons. After landing with the Canucks last March as one of the pieces in the Roberto Luongo deal, Markstrom passed through waivers unclaimed following training camp and has since thrived at AHL Utica, going 17-7-2 with a 1.95 GAA and .932 save percentage. If he's able to keep the momentum going against a possible playoff team in the Sharks, Markstrom could have a legitimate case for more frequent outings.

Markstrom will be recalled by the Canucks on an emergency basis Monday, Ellitote Friedman of Hockey Night in America reports.
Markstrom will be recalled to back up Eddie Lack, as Ryan Miller was sent back to Vancouver to undergo an MRI for an injury he sustained Sunday. The 25-year-old netminder has been great with AHL Utica this season, posting a 17-7-2 recorfd with a 1.95 GAA and .932 save percentage, and could see his first NHL action of the season if Miller's injury costs him an extended period of time.

Markstrom cleared waivers Saturday at noon and will now head to the AHL Utica Comets.
Wow -- has he really fallen this far? A few teams were rumored to be interested in him, but nothing materialized. The 24-year-old will likely be frustrated, so it will be interesting to follow the arc of this story over the next few months. But suffice to say his single-year value has plummeted.
